Another Beautiful Dinner & Dialogue

"I’m so grateful to be working with some of the greatest minds in the city and now the mid-Atlantic to curate these unforgettable celebratory moments built to honor the brilliance of our ancestors.

This was a tremendous event. It was beautiful, emotional, fun, funny and successful.

"By far, the best Field Notes we've done yet."
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday, October 1st for the Sugar Edition of our Field Notes: Dinner and Dialogue Series. And a heartfelt thank you to our generous partners, sponsors & volunteers who made it successful!

We created an unforgettable sugar-themed experience thanks to Chef Damian Mosley’s engaging dialogue, Shannon Mustipher's cane-based cocktail hour & rum tasting, Blacksauce Kitchen’s Caribbean cuisine, Michelle Lorentzen's interactive sugar art display, Pierre Bennu's specially commissioned portrait of Norbert Rillieux, and countless other contributions.

In the end, guests intellectually and sensorily explored sugar while honoring the millions of people that gave their lives to make our life sweeter. That's something we're very proud to attach to the legacy of the Farm Alliance.

Our Last Dinner is November 5th!

Our final dinner of the year will honor Abby Fisher, one of America's first Black cookbook authors. Deb Freeman, writer and host of award-winning podcast, Setting the Table, will lead the dialogue, while Chef Cieara Adams will cook up a family style dinner of Black Maryland comfort food.

Hosted at Hex Superette, the dinner menu will fittingly feature Fisher’s specialties, pickles and preserves.

The evening will also feature two hours of live jazz by the Brandon Woody trio and a silent art auction. At the end of the night, each dinner guest will receive a complimentary letterpress recipe card and customized coaster to take home.
Cocktail & Live Jazz Hour: $50
Dinner and Dialogue: $65
All Inclusive: $115

Next season's success starts now. That's why a few weeks ago, Farmers Myeasha and Andy sowed cover crop cocktails at the farm! Each field received a custom combination of tillage radish, clover, vetch, rye and peas. These plants will grow over the winter and provide numerous benefits not only to our farm's soil health but to our larger watershed.

Fibrous root networks will anchor soil in place, preventing erosion of sediment and nutrients into our waterways. Nitrogen-fixing abilities of leguminous plants will boost soil fertility, reducing the need for fertilizer inputs next year. Weed suppression, disease and pest prevention, and improved water infiltration are all additional benefits, not to the mention the potential harvest in the end!

From the Field

Our Programs Manager Alison Worman has been busy traveling around the city conducting site visits with our Member Farms and Gardens. While we see our members regularly throughout the season we believe it's important to walk through the field one-on-one with our farmers. At these visits we have been able to provide technical assistance, referrals, and valuable resources, such as cover crop seeds, perfectly timed for fall planting. By actively engaging with our farmers, understanding their goals, mapping resources, and collecting data on each distinct farm, we aim to gather insights that will inform our programs for 2024.

It has been really inspiring to witness the unwavering dedication and hard work our members invest in their fields. The task of stewarding land, nourishing neighbors, and cultivating green spaces in the heart of Baltimore city is indeed a remarkable undertaking. Be sure to thank your farmers!

Re-Introducing Our Interns

We're thrilled to announce our past interns Nora Abdiruhman and Layla Salomon have returned to continue working with the Farm Alliance.

Nora Abdiruhman began her journey with us in 2020 in the heat of the pandemic, conducting interviews with farmers, assisting with markets, and Covid-19 relief support. This fall she will be supporting our events, communications and operations!

Layla Salomon joined Farm Alliance as a summer intern through Hopkins CIIP helping at the Black Butterfly Teaching Farm and in the office. We're thrilled to have Layla's continued support, eagerness to learn and attention to detail for the rest of the semester.

Field Day Finale

Last week we held our last Field Day of 2023. Our intern Nora Abdiruhman, details the wonderful event below.

This year’s Growing natural Dye’s Field Day with the Farm Alliance Black Butterfly Urban Farm Academy was a remarkable success! This field day was the last event of the season, bringing it to a wonderful close. Kenya Miles of Blue Light Junction, our host for the evening, provided guests with some insight into the origins of Blue Light; an intended place of respite, an offering to those who paved the path which brought us here today. As a space Blue light Junction can be described as just that, a sanctuary. Guests are welcomed in by the scent of cooking marigolds and invited to explore the space freely before the event begins! Kenya provided an in-depth tour of Blue Light’s grow garden, where 65% of crop yield is self-seeded, with primary components of the garden being marigolds and indigo. When guests returned to the color lab, each person was offered a pre-mordanted woolen skein to use as a part of the dye workshop. Guests were able to utilize two different communal dye vats, one of indigo, and one of marigolds. The actual exercise of dying was left up to the individual, some were observed braiding or twisting their skeins before choosing a vat to dye, the depth of color, duration of submersion, and choices of vats varied with each tassel coming out as unique and beautiful as the last! We look forward to more workshops with Blue Light Junction and hope to see at our field days in 2024.
