UTM adds fun to fundraising for United Way 
Each year, the University of Toronto Mississauga supports the United Way as part of tri-campus efforts at University of Toronto. United Way Greater Toronto’s network serves 13 municipalities across Peel, Toronto and York Region.
They invest approximately $6 million each month in more than 300 community agencies, to meet immediate needs and drive lasting solutions to poverty.

Current faculty members, librarians, and staff have received a personalized donation link to their U of T email. Contact assistance@uwgt.org to have your link resent.

Parking Pass raffle:

The UTM Parking office has donated an annual pass (valued at $837.60) for raffle, with all proceeds going to the UW. The winner of the parking pass can choose to be reimbursed the cost of their current parking pass, or the raffled pass, whichever is less. Purchase tickets ($5 each, three for $10 or seven for $20) here. Deadline is Nov. 15.  

Call for In-Kind Donations:
  • Book sale: The UTM Library is seeking books, board games, DVDs, comic books, etc. for their fundraiser Nov. 22-23. Drop by the library with your items, or contact them directly if you need support.
  • Craft sale: Taking place at the annual staff holiday party, the craft sale team is requesting any creative items such as art, knitting, cross stitching, homemade jams and jellies, jewelry, ornaments, candles, etc. Contact tara.fader@utoronto.ca or car.demarco@utoronto.ca.
Bridge work may cause traffic delays on Burnhamthorpe
Please be aware of City of Mississauga roadwork taking place on Burnhamthorpe Road West as part of bridge reconstruction. Vehicle lane reductions will impact commuters travelling both eastbound and westbound until April 30, 2024. UTM community members may experience traffic delays. Read more  

UTM Honey now on sale

UTM Honey is now available at Hospitality & Ancillary Service (HAS) office, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed 1 to 2 p.m.). HAS oversees five beehives on campus, with approximately 50,000 bees in each hive. Harvested honey is also used by campus food services.
A not-for-profit program, the honey is sold at cost: $8/250g jar, $14/500g jar and $20/1 kg. The office, in the William G. Davis building, Suite 3127, accepts debit and credit. Learn more

Series examines the Black Poesis
The first installment of the Black Research Network Dialogues Speaker Series for 2023/24 will feature the University of Toronto’s SA Smythe and curator Gaëtane Verna (Wexner Center/La Biennale di Venezia) for a conversation about how the concept of Black Poesis – the generative formation of a Black aesthetics – has influenced their work, the arts and the world.  
The event takes place both in-person and online on Oct. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. Learn more

New website highlights Black excellence and opportunities 

UTM has launched the Black at University of Toronto Mississauga website to celebrate Black excellence and highlight resources and opportunities for Black students, staff, faculty, librarians and alumni. The website also links to a newly developed dashboard that tracks the campus’ progress towards the recommendations of U of T’s Anti-Black Racism Task Force. Learn more

  Join the Convocation procession

Members of the Governing Council, faculty, staff and librarians are invited to join the academic processions for the Fall 2023 Convocation ceremonies. Those interested in participating can RSVP online until Oct. 25. Learn more

Student Technology Survey set to launch Oct. 23
Staff, faculty and librarians are being asked to encourage students to participate in the annual Educause Technology Research in the Academic Community (ETRAC) student survey, which will be sent to 1,000 randomly selected UTM undergraduate students on Oct. 23. The ETRAC survey asks questions about student experiences with the technologies and services provided by the University. Data will be available at the campus level in 2024 on the ITS PGA webpageLearn more

The university essay will die out: AI will replace traditional forms of academic assessment—and create new ones

Historically, professors have assumed that the person whose name is on the cover page is the person who wrote the paper. With generative AI, it’s easier and cheaper for students to avoid writing their papers themselves. Learn more

Students with U of T Mississauga's forensics program are carefully digging up and cataloguing the remains from the Oakville and Milton Humane Society pet cemetery. Learn more 
Appointments
Mahnoor (Noor) Leghari has been appointed as the inaugural equity project specialist – sciences with the UTM Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Office as of Oct.17.
In her recent position as equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) coordinator at the University of Toronto Scarborough’s EDI Office, Leghari developed and delivered professional development sessions on equity, diversity, and inclusion principles, discrimination and harassment prevention, 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion, and microaggressions for faculty, librarians, staff, and students.
