Topic: Towards a Transformational Farm Bill

Speaker: Betty Ahrens, Union of Concerned Scientists

For too long, our food and farm system has exploited marginalized peoples and our natural environment in the name of profit. Increasingly, industrial agriculture corporations dominate the system, leading to less healthy food, ecosystems, and communities, putting family farms out of business in the process. But we can do something to change that, to stop these harmful practices and return the power to farmers and their communities. The Union of Concerned Scientists are working in coalition with dozens of other organizations across the country to Transform this system through the food and farm bill.

FLVCS Veterans Day Events

Mark your calendar for Veterans Day November 11, 2023, which will be a special day for FLVCS.

In the morning, we will walk in the Sarasota Veterans Day Parade. Immediately after the parade, we will have our traditional FLVCS picnic at Bayfront Park in Sarasota.

In the afternoon, FLVCS is co-sponsoring a Veterans Day non-profit EXPO at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Fruitville Rd, Sarasota starting at 4:00 PM. Our co-sponsors are Floridians for Democracy, and Choose Democracy Now.

If you belong to a non-profit, please have your group participate to show the community the good work done by your group. You can obtain an application by email to CONTACT@FLVCS.US

At 6:00 PM, plan to attend the talk by Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat also at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Sarasota, co-sponsored by FLVCS along with Floridians for Democracy and Choose Democracy Now. Professor Ben-Ghiat will speak about preserving democracy from the threat of fascism.

Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat is an American historian and cultural critic. She is a professor of history and Italian studies at New York University and author of Strongmen: Mussolini to Present. She writes for CNN, The Economist, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Atlantic.

Environmental Working Group Recommendation

Our FLVCS Environmental Working Group suggests that you subscribe to The Invading Sea. It has long been a great example of responsible environmental journalism. Now it is even better, after being taken over by Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies under the leadership of editor Nathan Crabbe.

Click here to see an example of this good work in their latest newsletter. If you like it, you can subscribe at:  https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/vIC9GhU/theinvadingsea.
