Summary and Key Learnings |
| TNFD Launch and the Private Sector’s role in a Global Nature Transition The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), a voluntary disclosure framework released its final recommendations at the NY Stock Exchange on 18 September 2023 marking the beginning of an important shift for the private sector to begin taking responsibility for their nature impact. MRV technologies can be seen as nature data products and play a crucial role in this transition by helping the finance community create portfolio alignment metrics, manage risk, and more. Raviv Turner, Founding Member of the MRV Collective was at the launch event and is also a member of the TNFD Nature Data Facility Steering Committee. | | Earlier in the year, the MRV Collective’s Head of Ecosystem, Daniel Swid led a Nature Data Catalog Working Group with organizations including Pollination Group, IBAT, GBIF, TNFD, Capital for Climate, ESRI, the Capitals Coalition, Systemiq, and Nature4Climate. The output of these session generated numerous communication visuals and underscored the important role that MRV providers play to ensure high integrity nature data and come together to create incentives for greater data sharing. |

Member Programming RecapHow do we prioritize the protection of nature and biodiversity? In which locations? What is the appropriate container for action and monitoring activities? How much does it cost to finance each location’s protection or restoration?
During this member programing event, Karl Burkart shared the background and evolution of the One Earth bioregions framework. “The framework was created via a grueling collaborative process among roughly 50 scientists”, he said. “With a terrestrial focus, the framework defines 844 eco-regions nested within discrete bioregions”. The group explored containers for action and how MRV providers can leverage the One Earth taxonomy around bioregions and ecoregions to establish tech stacks for nature.
How might we conserve 70% of the world’s biodiversity? Stay tuned for the forthcoming release of the study “Conservation Imperatives” to be published in Frontier and co-authored by One Earth and IUCN which will highlight 1200 biodiversity hotspots and what we can do to prioritize them. This list is an important step towards understanding the costs of conservation and restoration.
Karl is the Deputy Director of One Earth and formerly the Director of Media, Science & Technology at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. One Earth's Science Program supports academic institutions and NGOs working on the cutting edge of climate and energy science, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable food systems. |

Working Group Update: IPLCs & Technical Assistance with Mozaic EarthMRV Collective has teamed up with Mozaic Earth on a working group to help center IPLC views within existing MRV technology offerings to ensure that new solutions are designed with the input and guidance of local guardians and communities. Stay tuned for more details and a forth coming spotlight series. There’s also a worthwhile discussion paper from the Biodiversity Credit Alliance entitled “Building just partnerships in Biodiversity credits” which is a reminder for investors participating in emerging nature markets about the importance of working closely with IPLCs — check it out! |
Share your MRV Use CasesHave an MRV use case or story to share? We’re currently accepting submissions to be considered and expanded upon. We are especially interested to include those supporting environmental and social justice.
It is crucial that emerging economies have access to MRV technologies and that local communities are included as part of the MRV efforts with fair revenue sharing throughout the value chain. |

Good News |
Investment and Finance Community Roundup A rapid uptick in investment and finance community interest in nature and biodiversity is good news, especially for MRV providers who are able to help address key challenges regarding nature data towards portfolio alignment metrics and chart a course for a global nature transition. Hope for Amazon with Methodology Approval Brazil approves a methodology that allows generation of carbon credits on mature forests that promises to democratize access to the carbon market for rural property owners who maintain native vegetation. The Methodology for Carbon Removal in Private Conservation Areas was authored by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) leveraging public data from MapBiomas, to calculate carbon (CO2) removals and generate removals credits. |

Challenges |
Global Cooperation, the Nature Transition and a Mounting Sovereign Debt CrisisThe “market” for nature and biodiversity has arrived with the launch of TNFD and an uptick in private sector activity and interest in nature and biodiversity. With all the excitement and momentum, its important to spend time with history and establish connections across generations by seeking out elders for guidance and inspiration.
Will markets help solve our problems and support a nature transition? How can we ensure a level playing field for market participants? What effect do emerging technologies have on competition, welfare, human prosperity? How will MRV and nature tech companies be affected by |

Joseph Stiglitz is an American New Keynesian economist. Known for his research on information asymmetry, risk aversion, and monopolistic competition, Stiglitz received the 2001 Nobel Prize in economics. He is currently a professor at Columbia University and chief economist of The Roosevelt Institute.
Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pandemics require global cooperation. Our brief review of Prof Stiglitz’s recent lecture explores a new multilateralism and an alternative to that based on neoliberalism which might provide the basis for cooperation and might look different from current global politics — especially with respect to a nature transition. Read the full article on covering Prof Stiglitz’s recent lecture and share your thoughts.
