Director of Talent Acquisition & Total Rewards, and Chris Schrader, Classification/Compensation Manager attended our meeting to discuss reclassification at UMBC
    • We had a great discussion about the UMBC position reclassification process

Homecoming is this Weekend!

We know…it’s supposed to rain, but Homecoming is happening rain or shine and there are PLENTY of great indoor/under cover activities for you to enjoy, including Deans & Donuts, First LEGO League Build, the Alumni & Friends Tent (we’ll put up the sides!), Men's Basketball Black and Gold Scrimmage, Grit-X, and the Greek Alumni & Friends Party!

The carnival company will do their best to continue ride and game operations as long as they can do so safely. Some rides and games are able to operate in a drizzle. Any threat of lightning will shut everything down immediately and for at least 30 minutes. Guest safety is our top priority. If you, or people in your life, are really excited about carnival rides, the Carnival will also be open from 6 – 10 p.m. on Friday, October 13.

Get more information and schedules on the Homecoming website!

2023-2024 Staff Awards Nominations

Nominate a colleague today for one of the Staff Awards - the deadline is October 31!

Is there someone:
  • In your department who is doing a superior job?
  • On campus who is exceptionally talented and dedicated?
  • Who is truly outstanding and always there to help solve a problem or take on new or challenging tasks?
  • Who goes above and beyond to support student success?
  • Who has made a significant contribution to enhance effectiveness and efficiency in learning or administration?
  • Who has done stellar work to advance inclusion, multiculturalism, or social justice?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may have a nominee for the UMBC Presidential Staff Awards, the Board of Regents USM Staff Awards, the Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award for Outstanding Exempt or Non-Exempt Staff, the Karen L. Wensch Endowment Award for Outstanding Non-Exempt Staff, and the Teresa Lupinek Endowment Award for Outstanding Exempt or Non-Exempt Staff.

We invite all departments and offices to submit nominations to the Office of the Provost to the attention of the Staff Awards Committee. Take a minute to recognize our most deserving staff colleagues (exempt and non-exempt) by nominating them for one or more of these prestigious awards.

Criteria, nomination form, and instructions can be found here.
ICYMI: The Alumni Awards are being presented on October 26th, including the inaugural Outstanding Staff Award! The first Outstanding Staff Award is being presented to Rehana Shafi, Director of the Sherman Teacher Scholars Program, at UMBC. RSVP to attend the Alumni Awards here

Meet the Senator - Michael Walsh

I serve as a Council of University System Staff (CUSS) representative! I started as a PhD student in 2010, hoping to get my degree and go on to a career of teaching -- elsewhere. I loved the classes and professors, but in 2015, to earn some extra cash, I tried out Summer Orientation Advising. Within two weeks, I realized this was my actual calling. Not only academic advising, but working with the most unbelievably dedicated and genuine staff I have had the honor of knowing -- Dr. Ken Baron, Monique Ransom, Ericka Thompson, and others. I am truly blessed to be here.

In addition to advising, I also teach as an adjunct faculty member in POLI. Teaching makes me a better advisor, and advising makes me a better teacher -- and both are things that I LOVE.

Outside of UMBC, I'm a Pokemon master, and my alma mater published my translation of the 17th century Hungarian epic poem "Siege of Sziget" -- the first ever in English!
