Principal’s Notes

This past week has been a difficult one for many. The violence in Israel and Gaza is distressing and heartbreaking, especially to those in our community that have family and friends in the region. I want to take this opportunity to extend the offer of support in last weeks statement from Trent International and the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

  • Supports are available through Counselling Services inPeterborough: 705-748-1386 or counselling@trentu.ca

  • Volunteer chaplains and community liaisons from various faith traditions in the community are also available to students through Trent Spiritual Affairs’ Multi-faith Network.

  • Trent International can always be reached for resources and support at international@trentu.ca.

All of us at Lady Eaton College are here to support you as well and to help you connect with resources.

Hello Good Humans of Lady Eaton College!

The hills are alive with the colours of Autummmmmn! I am very excited to see all the lil fellas processing through our College Office! There are still a few spots available! Please sign up HERE or in your SEP if you can join us for both the making and the painting part.

We are also working to prepare for the annual LEC Haunted Drumlin in collaboration with Housing and it is surely shaping up to being a Spooktacular time! True Story! Please plan to be on campus for Halloween and if this is your jam- PLEASE sign up to help make this the best year yet! We are be looking for people to be scare actors, prop makers, make-up/hair designers and help with set up and take down, too! Share your skills or passion for the season!  Here is the form to sign up and a bit of a testimonial "Volunteering isn't just about lending a hand; it's about creating unforgettable memories and feeling the heartbeat of the action. As a volunteer, you'll be our rhythm-makers, our scare-tastic storytellers, and our spirit-raisers! Plus, it's a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, build your teamwork skills, and embrace your inner ghoul or ghost. Most definitely, plan to be on campus and share the plan with your friends!"

Academic Skills

Academic Skills Midterm Check-In

We are almost halfway through the term, which means Reading Week is almost here...and so are midterms!

Reading Week can be a great time for rest, catching up, working ahead, and planning the second half of the term to finish strong. Would you like support planning out your Reading Week? Plan out your Reading Week with Academic Skills on Monday, Oct. 23rd at 1PM on Zoom where we'll share tips and tricks to getting the most out of your week. Sign up on the Student Events Calendar.

Looking for midterm study tips? Join us Wednesday, Oct. 18th at 7PM on Zoom for midterm study tips. Sign up on the Events Calendar! Can't make it? Check out our How to Study Guide. In the meantime, test out a few of my favourite active study strategies!

  • Create your own practice questions - Use the course description, learning goals, and weekly themes in your syllabus to create your own practice questions.

  • Test your knowledge with the Spew Method - Make a list of 5-10 terms. Set a timer for 1-2 minutes per term. Without looking at your notes, spew out everything you can remember about the term. When the timer is up, compare your notes to your spew. Move on from what you know well and focus on the areas that need it.

  • Make a study chart - Organize information into columns (ex. Term, Definition, Example, Significance) to help you make connections and enhance your understanding.

  • Talk and teach - One of the most effective study approaches is to talk it out and practice teaching content to others - a friend, roommate, family member, pet, or imaginary friend

Haunted Drumlin and Halloween Movie Night - October 31st

Bring along your friends for a stroll through a student-driven haunted walkthrough outside on Lady Eaton’s grounds. We hope to see you there!

If the haunted walk through is not your vibe, that’s okay! At the same time as the Haunted Drumlin (6:00pm-10:00pm), LEC Cabinet is also hosting a Halloween movie night! This event is a less intense, cozier option for those of you who want to stay bundled up and warm on Halloween (with provided snacks!). Cabinet will be showing a not-so-scary Halloween-themed movie first, followed by a scarier horror movie for any horror fans. Keep your eye on @leccabinet for event updates, and @ladyeatontrentu (on Instagram) to vote for which movies you want to see!

Musings on Music

Hello Drumline readers!

For this week’s music suggestions, seeing as it is the ever-dreaded midterm season, I thought I would share the different music I put on while I’m studying. For me, music is an external noise that helps me focus on the task at hand and keeps the room from being too silent. I feel like, if I have multiple things happening at once, it’s easier to stay on track because I get less bored and less distracted by stifling silence. The following soundtracks, albums, and songs are what personally work for me, and I’d suggest giving them a try!

  • The Wedding Singer (soundtrack)

  • Stardew Valley (soundtrack)

  • Compas by Gipsy Kings (album)

  • “Show Me How” by Men I Trust (song)

  • “Heart to Heart” by Mac DeMarco (song)

  • “Over the Moon” by The María (song)

  • “My Love Mine All Mine” by Mitski (song)

Thanks for reading, and good luck with midterms!

Bookish Babbles

Hi folks!

Midterm season is upon us and I know it can be an overwhelming time. If you’re like me you’re probably busy with assignments and midterm exams, and maybe you’ve neglected taking time for yourself. It is especially important in this busy period to do the things that bring you joy, but I know it can be hard to find the time. That’s why this week I’m recommending a short book that won’t feel as intimidating to read.

Book recommendation: Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. Time travel! Coffee shop! All different forms of love! This translated fiction is a very heartwarming read in which characters can travel back in time to speak to a loved one - as long as they get back before their coffee gets cold.

You’ve got this!

And that's all for now... Just kidding, you know we can't end without a toad pun!

Six cartoon toads are lined up with pottery pots in front of them, all have speech bubbles: "stop with the puns or my eyes are going to glaze over," "I'm fired up for some fun," "I've had a ribbiting time, "your pottery looks toad-ally unique," "clay is wheel-y fun to work with," "I think I've got a handle on this pottery thing."
