Native Monarchs Established Pollinator Garden at the CARL Kennels

The CARL kennels had the opportunity to get a much needed make over in the front arena, Chris Amendt, Director of Native Monarchs, a local non-profit conservation organization and Ruben Alarcon, have been working together to create pollinator gardens at CSU Channel Islands. They got together to organize volunteers to clean up the front arena and the garden by the front office, and then put in plants, including succulents and milkweeds, the host plants for Monarch caterpillars.

There has been a sharp decrease in the Monarch butterfly population, so by planting donated milkweeds and other nectar plants, the hope is to increase their food supply to increase their numbers in the area.

Plants have been added around existing bushes and new plants in empty spots. New raised pots will succulents have been added along with bases to hold water and sand for the butterflies to drink out of, known as "puddlers."  The kennel now has much more color added by the parking lot sidewalk and this will get the attention of boarders as well.

Thank you to Chris Armendt for your hard work in seeing this project to its completion. Chris wrote up a nice article for the Santa Paula Times Newspaper as well.  Also, a thank you to CARL volunteers Ruben Alarco, Steve Rickels and Ann Morris for donating your Saturday to prepare the soil, add amendments and planting of these native plants.

St. Bonnie's  Basketball Team

A total of 15 boys from St. Bonnie's high school basketball team showed up at the CARL kennels last Saturday for a much needed kennel clean up day. Thanks to Mike Dodge for organizing and supervising the team who worked hard on several projects around the kennel. We hope to see them back again to do more work. The kennel dogs got some exposure and interest as well. 🐾

Adoption Practices

We have a number of good dogs that have not gotten adopted for months. With Covid we lost our community adoption events and they are coming back slowly. To see a dog at the kennel one must complete an application and be prescreened with conversation and home check before being able to be shown a dog by a volunteer.

I have been wondering how to better help our dogs. I read this and I think a conversation guided by this article including adopters, denied adopters, volunteers, sponsors, donors, supporters, and staff,  could help our dogs.

I would really appreciate someone who could research whether low barrier adoptions, which can increase adoptions, result in the same percent of good quality lives for the dogs. Years ago, one of our board members, Liz Arvin, said there was research that showed it did. We did not want to hear it, like all rescuers, we knew best. We were smaller, foster based and had up to 10 dogs in a boarding kennel. Now it seems more important to know whether we are really helping the dogs with our practices.

Please read the article and let us know if you will be available for discussion.   Depending on the numbers, we may have one or more groups for discussion, in person or by zoom.  If you would be available to facilitate a group discussion please let us know that.

Thanks,

CARL - Canine Adoption and Rescue League

Recent CARL Adoption Events

Sailor & Friends, Ventura, Saturday, October 7th 11:30am - 3:30pm!

It was a beautiful autumn day in Ventura at our monthly adoption event at Sailor and Friends Pet Supply located at 2020 E. Main Street. In attendance were our fearless leader Toni, supported by volunteers Christina, Kai, Mike, Jose and Kathy representing CARL. Also, of course were Marnie, the owner of Sailor and Friends and hostess to all, as well as other great vendors displaying their crafts. Our fur babies in attendance were Radish, Leche, Gunner, Louie, Nellie and Stella. It was sort of a slow day probably because there was no flea market across the street which usually draws more attention from local folks. I love it when alumni stop by with their family. I always tell our fur babies that that will be them someday. This time we saw 3 familiar fur babies. Bobby and Lisa, Lilly and Ronda and Nellie aka Leia with Luke and Nicole. Also, one of our favorite volunteers, Becky stopped by. In my 7 years of volunteering for CARL, I have learned that the #1 reason some dogs are returned to CARL after adoption is due to lack of research. Examples of this are Radish and Leche. Radish is a Husky with separation anxiety.  Like other dogs, he has certain needs. You must ask yourself would this beautiful pet fit into my life and would I be the right parent for him? Leche ran away from his foster. He knew something. He knew he did not want to live there. Dogs are intelligent animals with excellent instincts. We must listen and learn from them. They are trying to tell us something. At the pound, impatient people can take a dog home the same day. Which doesn't work in the long run. CARL receives many rescues this way. That is one of the reasons that we do a home check and require a couple of days to determine whether this may or may not work for both parties. CARL has been rescuing dogs since 1996.....almost 30 years. So it is safe to say we have learned a thing or two along the way. I encourage research ahead of time. When the time is right, just like you and your soulmate, the two of you will meet. On that note, I am happy to report that Stella found her new forever home and was adopted. She was a private adoption which our amazing Executive Director, Sharon allowed Toni to include at her event. It is all about our fur babies. That was a first for me. Kudos to Sharon and Toni. I would like to thank those of you who donated to CARL. We received a bag of Kibble and a particle board shelving unit that will fit perfectly inside our newest shed at the kennel for soft bedding. Our events are the first Saturday of every month from 11:30am - 3:30pm.  Our next events are scheduled for November 4th and December 2nd. Please stop by and meet some of our fur babies. We would love to see you there.
