Dear readers,

The wind is whistling, the trees are turning golden brown, it's autumn. High time to get your thick sweaters and warm jackets out of the closet. If you notice that one or the other piece of clothing no longer “sparks joy” or fits you, our _SWAP clothing swap event could be just the thing for you. On 9 November, you will have the opportunity to exchange your sorted out clothes for others in our project rooms in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

We send our warmest regards and wish you a good start into the fall season!

Design Discourse on 2 November
Designing Beyond Crises

Together with our member Archimedes Exhibitions, we cordially invite you to a talk in the AMDX workshop on 2 November. We want to shed light on the crises of our time – and still remain optimistic!

In an interactive fishbowl, Nancy Birkhölzer, Prof. Dr. Felix Kosok, and Mara Recklies will discuss with Prof. Carl Frech and the audience the topic: “Designing beyond Crises.“

We will ask: What do we mean by a future worth living, and how can we design it? How do we stay innovative and find workable solutions? Can creativity act as a catalyst? What are the ecological, political, and social implications of art and design? Do we need new and radical motifs, approaches, or images for a change in consciousness?

With project presentations by:
Katharina Loderstädt: Democracy Challenged; Ony Yan: Algen - (k)eine Zukunft, and Prof. Elizabeth Sikiaridi and Prof. Frans Vogelaar: Crisis Design.

UX Design Awards – Spring 2024
Four weeks left to enter & Deep Dive on 15 November

In the recently published Jury Digest, four members of the #UXDA23 jury talked about the criteria they base their decisions on. What does it take to effectively communicate the value of a design or the impact of a product? The Jury Digest offers insights into the decision-making process of a design jury. Definitely worth a (re-)watch –  not only, but especially, for anyone considering entering a project in the UX Design Awards. Meanwhile, here are four handy tips from our judges to make sure your submission shines:

  –  Keep to the point when answering the questions in the entry form.
  –  Create a compelling narrative in your responses:

  • Lay out the user's challenge and their real-world context: explain their situation in their field.
  • Describe how you pinpointed the problem and the research base behind it.
  • Explain the decisions you made based on your findings and the reasoning behind them.
  • Show how these insights and choices influenced your solution's design.

  –  Submit a short explanatory video to win over the judges. Showcase your solution's key features and why it makes a difference.
  –  If entering work with images that include languages other than English, it is helpful to provide translations.

All details on how to participate as well as the contest dates can be found on the UXDA website. 🍀 Good luck!

PHOENIX
A display for life

The screens we use to control our activities are not designed to keep up with our dynamic lifestyles. Traditional large-screen TVs are too static and one-sided for versatile media consumption, while mobile devices are too small and detract from our viewing experience at home. PHOENIX’s case study shows that display devices must be rethought to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

At the fair, applied artists sell usable art objects bursting with the joy of materials and the diversity of ideas.

Holocaust and war, awakening and emancipation, the Cold War, and the fall of the Berlin Wall led to tensions within society as well as fundamental realignments in the visual arts.
