Celebrating a Trailblazer for Quality
It’s difficult to overstate the impact Mary Wells has had on quality assurance for online learning. Beginning in 2003, Mary acted as one of the Co-Principal Investigators of the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) grant that led to the founding of Quality Matters. In this capacity, she co-authored the first QM Higher Ed Rubric and helped lay the foundation for QM’s professional development model. QM celebrated Mary’s contributions to the organization this year with the 2023 Directors Award for Exceptional Service to QM. Let’s look back on 20 years of her trailblazing work.

QM Connect 2023 was packed with fresh insights and fun, engaging community-building opportunities. Together, we learned about how to work with new technology, better include our learners, navigate the institutional landscape, and so much more.
“All the information that I'm seeing and hearing makes me excited to be an instructional designer. I look forward to this more than any other conference. This one matters the most to me because people here care.”
— Heather Braatz, QM Connect 2023 participant
Take a look at some highlights from the conference — and save the date(s) for QM Connect 2024 — Nov. 3-6 in Rosemont, IL — just outside Chicago.

Give Feedback That Supports Learners
Effective delivery of feedback is critical for learner success. This month, take a look at your plan for interacting with your learners and maximize the impact of the feedback you provide. Ask questions like:
- Have you constructed your assignments so learners receive feedback before their next assignment is due?
- Have you built in enough time between assignments to enable learners to review where they were incorrect — and have you provided feedback on why each answer choice was wrong?
- Are projects scheduled with enough time to complete each step and for feedback to be provided (either by peers or by you)?
Interested in more best practices that help center your course design around your learners? Bridge to Quality: A QM Online Course Design Guide is now updated to reflect the QM Higher Education Rubric, Seventh Edition. This resource is free for both members and non-members.
