THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT FACULTY RESEARCH DAY 2023 IGNITES NEW SPARKS OF CURIOSITY AND INQUIRY

The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment hosted its annual Faculty Research Day 2023 at the Coastlands on the Ridge, Musgrave on Friday, 27 October 2023.

The aim of the event was to foster a culture of research and innovation within the faculty, to provide a platform for sharing research findings, promoting intellectual discussions, and facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations.

Furthermore, the event also sought to celebrate the research achievements of the faculty’s members and to enhance the faculty’s research reputation and stimulate interest in research endeavours.

DEPARTMENT OF OPERATIONS AND QUALITY HOSTED A FOUR-DAY LECTURE SERIES

On Thursday, 26 October 2023, the Department of Operations and Quality Management in the Faculty of Management Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) concluded a four-day lecture series with Mr Sunil Thawani, who is an Author, Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and a Board Member and CEO, Quality Indeed Consulting Ltd. Dubai, UAE.

The lecture series which took place online and in person (hybrid) began on Monday, 23 October 2023. The overall objective of the lecture series was to improve delegates’ understanding of Operations and Quality Management by placing them into a global context so that they can expand their thinking beyond the South African borders.

PHAKIMPILO FOOD HAMPER HANDOVER

The Department of Student Services and Development at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) established the Phakimpilo food security programme which aims to assist the students which are not funded by the NSFAS or have any other bursaries. It is an ongoing programme which is run on a donation basis.

Mr Zwakele Ngubane, the Director: Advancement and Alumni Relations, thanked the Student Services Department for being the platform that supports the students in various ways and the Phakimpilo programme being one of those ways. “This is a result of several initiatives, and we hope that by doing this and instilling this seed, our students will also have the means to give back when they are alumni’s and CEO’s,” said Ngubane.

LECTURER AND AUTHOR, DR SASI GANGIAH ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO PUBLISH ACADEMIC CONTENT

Author and lecturer in the Department of Tourism and Hospitality at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Sasi Gangiah is encouraging students to indulge in publishing academic content as she feels it serves a crucial role in the advancement of knowledge, dissemination of research findings, and the enrichment of intellectual discourse.

Her motivation comes after she published her book: “Environmental Ergonomics: Commercial kitchens in a semi-tropical city”, which she launched at the 2023 Durban International Book Fair.

DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) has launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Simangele Zuma spoke to Ms Bongiwe Mnyandu, Assistant Registrar, managing the academic data and student records at DUT.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT? 

A: “I am an Assistant Registrar at DUT, managing the academic data and student records portfolio for the institution, this entails capturing and maintaining the approved institutional curriculum onto the information system that runs our student life cycle from enrolment all the way to graduation.
