Building Bridges with Families: Culturally Responsive Family Engagement  


Join us on November 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. via Zoom for session #2 of ACT Now’s Cultural Responsiveness Series to discuss the barriers to family engagement and learn essential strategies to build authentic relationships with families from diverse backgrounds. Discover how to effectively communicate, collaborate, and support families in a way that respects and values their unique cultural perspectives.

Illinois General Assembly's Last Week of Veto Session 

The Illinois General Assembly will meet in Springfield from November 7th to November 9th for the second week of veto session. Veto session is a time for lawmakers to consider vetoes, continue work on existing legislation, or introduce something new. Lawmakers have 15 calendar days to either override the veto or accept the governor’s changes. This week is the last opportunity for lawmakers to take action on the 21st CCLC funding issue before January. Please contact your elected officials and urge them to take action. ACT Now has developed a 21st CCLC one-pager for advocates to send to their elected officials.

Afterschool Alliance Program Provider Survey!

The Afterschool Alliance is conducting a survey to understand the support afterschool and summer learning programs are currently providing, the challenges they face, and what their needs are to better help the children and families they serve. Your answers will provide valuable information to share with funders, policymakers, education leaders, and the public. Everyone who completes the full survey will be entered into a drawing where 50 respondents will receive a $100 gift card.

Participants of the Chicago Learning Exchange (CLX) November Meetup will explore resources and strategies around the recruitment of young people and the adults who mentor them. This meet-up will take place at the All-Star Project site (542 S. Dearborn) on November 16, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Nominations open for NAA’s Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders!

The National Afterschool Association's Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders identifies young leaders and recognizes the talent of afterschool champions who have the potential to influence the field of afterschool for years to come. Join NAA in recognizing individuals, age 30 or under who are vested in advocacy, professional development, creative program design, the power of youth voice, data and evaluation, and social justice. The nomination period ends December 6, 2023.

My CHI. My Future. Citywide Meeting

The next My CHI. My Future. Citywide meeting will take place on November 16, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E Washington)! Participants will have the opportunity for networking and collaboration opportunities. 
Youth Opportunities
Apply to Be an Afterschool Youth Ambassador! Calling all youth! ACT Now is launching our first-ever Youth Afterschool Ambassadors program! Afterschool Youth Ambassadors will learn how to effectively communicate about their afterschool experiences with elected officials and how to use their afterschool stories to advocate for change. Youth participating in the council will receive a stipend of $500 for their time. Participants must be a high school student in a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) program. Selected youth council members will participate virtually for an hour and a half at four meetings as well as attend ACT Now’s in-person Advocacy Day in April. Any youth that is interested must apply by December 4, 2023, at  6:00 p.m. CST. If you are a program provider, please share this flyer with the youth in your organization!
