Dear Readers,

Fostering inclusion, awareness and a culturally responsive approach to teaching benefits all involved. Not only does creating greater multicultural awareness and inclusion help learners with different backgrounds and needs, but it encourages acceptance and helps prepare them to thrive in an increasingly diverse world. As educators, we must remind ourselves that diversity and cultural awareness are crucial, and that the benefits they can have on students now and in the long-term are many.

A few weeks ago, we attended the PROCEDE Conference hosted by the Lester B. Pearson School Board. The several workshops attended inspired this month’s newsletter, as we were reminded how essential diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are when creating a learning environment. What is more, we learned that to be truly effective, DEI must be demonstrated through genuine engagement, concrete actions, meaningful education and transparent communication.

Rather than a simple destination, DEI is a journey. It is an investment in bettering ourselves and a growing expectation for all members of any community.

Until next time, let us increasingly welcome cultural implications, apply self-reflection, and act with intention.

Gathering evidence of learning through triangulation is essential to adapt teaching and learning strategies more effectively to students' needs. A variety of strategies can be employed to form our judgement, combining observations, discussions and student work. The aim of this workshop is to get familiar with various approaches for gathering evidence on the progression of students' mathematical skills.

Diverse Scientists and Their Impact on Science Today

By Stephanie Barringer - January 19, 2022

Historically, science was a white man’s club; women and minorities need not apply. Since its creation in 1901, only 58 of the 609 Nobel Prizes awarded have been given to women, more than half of which were given in the past 20 years. While minority representation in science has improved over time, there is still a long path ahead.

Digital Culture in Education

By the RECITAGE team

Digital culture in education has changed how we learn and share knowledge. Understanding this is not just for educators, it's essential for students and anyone working in Adult Education Centres. This article defines digital culture in education and demonstrates how it's shaping the way we teach and learn. Let’s have a quick look to see how it positively impacts education.

Neurodivergent Learners at PROCEDE

At the PROCEDE conference, our collaborative team from RÉCIT AGE, Place Cartier, WICC, and VACC held a workshop dedicated to neurodiversity, seeking ways to include the distinct needs of adult learners. Through video presentations, we captured a range of perspectives from both VT and AGE, including administrators, consultants, teachers, special education technicians, support staff, and students. Participants went beyond theory, gaining valuable insights into the impact of inclusivity and the strategies that were employed by various levels of centre staff.

We've developed a website at http://bit.ly/procedeneuro that will continue to serve as a valuable resource for future professional development sessions in our AGE and VT centres. Interested in a similar session in your centre? Reach out to us!

Every student comes with their own story. Most of the time, whether they come from Abitibi, the Maritimes, or the Central African Republic, in a context of kindness, they want to share that story.
