Photo of the Month: The Final Destination
Photo: Evan Price
Our photo of the month offers a harrowing look at an animal experience we don’t ever see in the Global North. It was taken by Evan Price in Malawi, Africa. A large pig is tightly tied across the back of a bicycle, headed on a lengthy journey to market. Using a bicycle is the most economical means of transportation for the pig’s owner.
We are drawn in for several reasons. First, this is an unusual and even confusing sight. The strain and pain the pig must be experiencing gives us a painful, visceral jolt. Then, we see the owner’s hand at the top left of the frame, reminding us who is in charge. And finally, the leading line of the road pulls our eye onward to the pig’s final destination.
As We Animals builds more NGO partnerships in Africa, we’ll have an increasing quantity and variety of farmed animal images and video for everyone to use.
