Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and promote good cybersecurity practices among individuals, businesses, and organizations. Review this month’s tips and announcements below.

One Minute for Cyber Security

Support computer safety at Berkeley Lab and incorporate a “One Minute for Cyber Security” discussion into meeting agendas for a quick refresh on best practices.

The #1 Action to Improve Cyber Security

It's easy. Make sure your operating system and applications are up to date. Take a moment to run Windows update, run Software Update on OSX, let Zoom update, etc. Do this regularly on all your computing devices, Lab owned, personally owned, and mobile.

Don't Reuse Passwords

Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. It might be easier to remember but reusing passwords increases the risk of a security breach across various services if one is compromised. Consider using a password manager like LastPass to help you create unique passwords for each account and easily insert them when needed.

Special Cyber Announcement: Update Web Browsers

The Lab Cyber Security team released a special announcement regarding web browsers like Chrome and Firefox. A significant vulnerability was recently reported targeted image compression technology broadly used by web browsers. Everyone should immediately ensure their web browser is updated.

Updated Annual Cyber Security Training

Berkeley Lab's annual Cyber Security Training (SEC 201) has recently been updated based on your feedback. SEC 201 is a required training for all employees, so it’s important to the cyber team that it resonates. Let us know what you think of the new updates and thank you for your participation!

Windows Requires CrowdStrike Starting Nov. 1

Effective November 1, all Berkeley Lab computers running Microsoft Windows must have CrowdStrike software installed. CrowdStrike is the Lab’s new antivirus solution and it provides effective protection for the unique challenges presented by the Windows operating system.

Changes to Institutional Service Email Addresses

In the coming weeks, emails from ServiceNow, Taleo, and LabAlert will start arriving From addresses in an lbl.gov subdomain, e.g., @service-now.lbl.gov, @hsc.lbl.gov, and @labalert.lbl.gov, instead of @lbl.gov senders.

This is an official change to better secure Berkeley Lab communications. As the senders change, please update your email filters with the new From addresses. Contact help@lbl.gov for questions and concerns.

Windows Passwords – Active Directory (AD) vs Local User Account

Windows computers issued by Berkeley Lab IT will either use an Active Directory or a Local User account. They are different but are both used for logging into Windows computers. In this article, we explain the difference between the two systems and provide guidance in case you need to reset or update your passwords.

UC Women in Technology Committee (UC WIT)

The University of California Women in Technology Committee (UC WIT) is a self-chartered, independent entity that promotes a supportive, inclusive environment to advance the professional goals and aspirations of women in technology. To fulfill this mission, the committee pursues initiatives at the university-wide level, leveraging and supporting the work of location-based WIT committees and partnering with other leadership and system-wide committees.

Berkeley Lab is establishing a local WIT chapter as an initiative of the WSEC ERG Networking Subcommittee. The chapter committees are limited to 4 members per location. The current Berkeley Lab committee members are Arica Chhay (IT Web Services), Lisa Claus (NERSC), and Wei Feinstein (IT Scientific Computing). We are looking for 1 more person to join us and represent the Lab in a monthly UC-wide virtual meeting. Additional interest is always welcome so members can rotate.
