Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and promote good cybersecurity practices among individuals, businesses, and organizations. Review this month’s tips and announcements below.
Support computer safety at Berkeley Lab and incorporate a “One Minute for Cyber Security” discussion into meeting agendas for a quick refresh on best practices.
It's easy. Make sure your operating system and applications are up to date. Take a moment to run Windows update, run Software Update on OSX, let Zoom update, etc. Do this regularly on all your computing devices, Lab owned, personally owned, and mobile.
Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. It might be easier to remember but reusing passwords increases the risk of a security breach across various services if one is compromised. Consider using a password manager like LastPass to help you create unique passwords for each account and easily insert them when needed.
The Lab Cyber Security team released a special announcement regarding web browsers like Chrome and Firefox. A significant vulnerability was recently reported targeted image compression technology broadly used by web browsers. Everyone should immediately ensure their web browser is updated.
Berkeley Lab's annual Cyber Security Training (SEC 201) has recently been updated based on your feedback. SEC 201 is a required training for all employees, so it’s important to the cyber team that it resonates. Let us know what you think of the new updates and thank you for your participation!
