Social Scientists in Action
  • SS students Jenna Messer, Maya Klanderman, and Larissa Juip co-presented at the annual conference for the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums in Oklahoma City, OK last week.
    • Their round table presentation, "Indigenous Storywork: Bridging Gaps in Transdisciplinary Research," was well received by attendees and is the culmination of a 2022 UPERSS/MEG project.
    • While in OKC, students also experienced a department-sponsored visit to the First Americans Museum, a collaborative Tribal museum representing the 39 tribes of Oklahoma.
    • Support for this trip came through the SS Travel Award, ACLS, Mellon Foundation, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and NSF.

      • Savannah Obert-Pfeiffer (B.S. Sustainability Science and Society, May 2023) has been working as a Restoration Associate with the Nature Conservancy in Michigan.

Grad Positions:
  • Assistant Professor of Geography
    • Old Dominion University’s Department of Political Science & Geography seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin Fall 2024.
    • We are seeking a geographer to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on campus and online whose research addresses the nexus of environmental geography and applied geospatial analysis.
    • The successful candidate will be able to teach existing courses in our undergraduate program in Geography and contribute to expanding offerings in physical and environmental geography.
    • Applications will be reviewed on November 20th.  
  • Southeastern Energy Justice Post-Doctoral Research Associate
    • A team of interdisciplinary researchers at the University of South Carolina (SC) and the University of Tennessee (TN) is excited to hire a post-doctoral research associate to work primarily on a project funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
    • The project aims to understand what a ‘just transition’ means for local communities, labor movements, and energy vulnerable populations in SC and TN.
    • The project’s mixed-methods approach combines empirical community-based research with legal and policy analysis.
    • The position lasts for 12 months, with an anticipated start date of spring 2024.
    • The starting salary is $60,000 per year plus benefits.

    • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
  • Lecturer in Environmental Policy at Purdue University
    • The teaching load is 4/4, but typically only 3 preps per semester. 
    • The person in this position will teach at least one of two large environmental courses (Intro to Environmental Policy or Global Green Politics) along with other courses related to their areas of interest. 
    • Starting salary range for this position is $54,000-$56,000. 
    • A PhD is preferred, but we will consider ABD with a completed master's degree.
    • Candidates must have the ability to work in the U.S. without immigration sponsorship from Purdue. 
  • Tenure Track Position in Environmental Studies at Oberlin College
    • This is an open-field search for a scholar with primary training in environmental studies or related disciplines, and expertise in a sub-field such as agriculture/food systems, urban studies, geography, or environmental public health.
    • Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning fall of 2024, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.  
    • Review of applications will begin on November 27 and will continue until the position is filled. 
  • 2 positions with the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research Education Program
    • Grant Administrator 
    • Administrative Operations Coordinator
      • This position oversees internal administrative operations of USDA/NIFA’s Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, which funds applied research in twelve Northeast states and the District of Columbia.
      • They co-manage the Northeast regional SARE office, to fulfill the University of Vermont’s obligations as a host institution for the SARE program.
      • The salary range for this position is $46,400 to $88,200, with a robust benefits package.
