Last month we asked you about experiences of hospital discharge in the last 12 months.

The responses we received highlighted a stark difference in hospital discharge experiences, with respondents rating their (or a loved ones) experiences of hospital discharge as either being excellent or poor .

Examples of excellent experiences included 'getting transport home very quickly' and the process all going smoothly with 'excellent care'.

Poor experiences included respondents feeling 'very rushed' or being discharged 'with very little notice'. We also heard from people discharged with 'supplies but not means of administering'.

Three quarters of a million vaccines given to protect vulnerable people in Sussex

More than 400,000 people in Sussex have protected themselves from flu, and more than 350,000 from COVID-19, by taking up the offer of free winter vaccinations to help them fight off seasonal illness this winter.

For some, flu or COVID-19 can be very dangerous and even life-threatening. The flu and COVID-19 vaccines are offered to people most at risk of getting seriously ill or who are most likely to pass it on to other people at risk.

Vaccination clinics are continuing every week, and people who are eligible can book an appointment by visiting the National Booking System online or calling 119, or responding to a local text or call invitation.

Hundreds of thousands of NHS patients to be offered the chance to travel for treatment

In October, NHS England announced NHS patients who have been waiting the longest for treatment will be offered the opportunity to travel to a different hospital, if it means they could be seen sooner.

Offers will be sent to up to 400,000 eligible patients who will then be able to submit their details including how far they are willing to travel – 50 miles, 100 miles or nationally. NHS teams can then identify whether any alternative hospitals have capacity to see them sooner.

Responding to the announcement, Louise Ansari, Chief Executive of Healthwatch England said:

"Many patients facing long waits for care will welcome the news that they can now choose to travel for treatment if it means they will be seen sooner.

However, without support from the NHS with transport and accommodation costs, this solution will only help those who can afford to travel for faster care.

Record numbers of people are currently stuck on NHS waiting lists, and our research has repeatedly highlighted the impact long waits have on patients, particularly people from groups facing health inequalities, including people on lower incomes.

People have also told us that they would welcome the opportunity to travel to receive care more quickly, as long as any additional costs incurred would be covered.

We have called for support to improve people's experiences of waiting for NHS treatment, such as improving communications between patients and their care teams and offering support to people while they wait, including support or signposting to help for their mental health.

We’re now calling on NHS England and Integrated Care Boards to work together to ensure everyone choosing to travel for faster treatment is given support, including with the costs of transport and accommodation – as described in the Elective Recovery Plan. Otherwise, this option risks deepening health inequalities by only providing solutions to people who can afford to contribute towards the additional costs of travel”.

Improving people's care by working better together

Evidence from the Healthwatch network indicates people expect and want collaborative working when it comes to their care, not just between the NHS and external partners, but between people, departments and services within the NHS too.

To understand the impact partnership work has had on patients and what 'better' could look like, Healthwatch England has analysed its evidence for insights into how the NHS is currently working to meet people's needs and how people's care experiences can be improved.

This briefing analyses people's experiences to support the development of a long-term vision for the NHS to work better through collaboration and partnership to improve health and care for all.

Healthwatch -  What we have heard about health and care services in East Sussex

We recently shared the October edition of our ‘You Said, We Did’ resource which highlights how we have responded to enquiries received by our Information and Signposting Service, as well as some of the wider actions we have taken in response to health and care issues.

Our activity in October included:
  • We told our NHS Primary Care colleagues we have heard from people facing barriers in accessing and using GPs and other services, especially if they have a speech or hearing related issue which makes phone and virtual engagement challenging. We shared resources from STAMMA so that GP practices could recognise and take steps to improve accessibility for people who stammer.
  • We have recently published an Introductory Guide to Adult Social Care aimed at supporting people engaging with social care services for the first time. We have heard that identifying where and how to access information, advice and support can be an overwhelming experience. Our guide seeks to provide some first steps.

Patient Lead Assessment of the Care Environment (PLACE)

Since early October our volunteers have been out across the county undertaking 17 Patient Lead Assessment of the Care Environment (PLACE) visits.
  • PLACE visits annually review NHS care settings such as acute hospitals, mental health units, community hospitals and local hospices.

  • They involve local people (known as patient assessors) assessing how the environment supports the provision of clinical care, assessing such things as privacy and dignity, food, cleanliness, and general building maintenance, and the extent to which the environment is able to support the care of those with dementia or with a disability.

  • The PLACE assessments focus exclusively on the environment in which care is delivered and do not cover clinical care provision or how well staff are doing their job.
Results from previous years PLACE visits are available here, and those from this year should be published early in 2024.

Hear what some of our volunteers have to say about taking part in the PLACE programme:

“I enjoy taking on a PLACE assessment as I feel I am helping a large organisation understand the patient perspective and look at ways to continue improving the patient experience meeting their needs.”

“The invitation offered by all NHS Trusts to Healthwatch volunteers gives us the opportunity to represent the local population and potentially a chance to influence change for the benefit of all patients who may use the NHS services at some stage. Having done these annual inspections for several years we… have seen a lot of improvements and changes in the NHS environments, including quality of food, car parking, better signage and general maintenance of buildings.”
