These once-neglected spaces are being lovingly transformed into dynamic community assets, where people gather, art flourishes, and the spirit of Midtown truly shines.

We're also giving you a sneak peek into what's in store for the month ahead, keeping you connected to the heartbeat of our community.

Alleys can be community-building places, where neighbors BBQ and kids run & play because vehicles and strangers are less common than on busy city streets. In order make use of these spaces, they require transformation from being uninviting places, where trash, weeds, rats, general neglect, and graffiti flourish. Our program, Alleys to Assets aims to not just clean alleys in the Midtown District but transform them into invested community spaces.

This program consists of a 4-stage process:

  1. Clean up Day 1Block captains are identified and help spread the word to neighbors
  2. Follow-up Inspections: Midtown will work with DHCD Inspects to perform follow-up inspections and DPW to replace dilapidated trash cans. Monthly walkthroughs will be coordinated.
  3. Secure Funding: Midtown will work to secure funding for Community Art Projects
  4. Clean-up Day 2as well as a Community Art Day
Midtown is providing day-of event and post-event support. We are excited for this new initiative and are kicking things off with the first events on November 4th.

Help us jumpstart our program to turn some of our dirtiest alleys into neighborhood assets! This event will take place in two locations:

Working Together Towards
a Cleaner Neighborhood

In the Midtown Community Benefits District, we're committed to helping Baltimore City enforce sanitation codes to maintain a clean and healthy environment for all residents.

This new step-by-step guide outlines the process for addressing sanitation violations through the 311 system.
Before submitting a request to 311, make sure the issue violates City Code. See Section 305 and 306 of Baltimore City Property Maintenance Code for issues around trash, rats, weeds, and other sanitation concerns.

For more information and tips on making effective requests, visit our website. Together, we can maintain the cleanliness and charm of our community.

As part of a continuing series, we are sharing monthly metrics on six key operational services. While these are just a portion of our daily services, our dedicated team strives to provide consistent support 7 days a week to each of the 144-blocks within the Midtown Community Benefits District.

During the month of October 2023, Midtown’s ambassadors:

  • Removed 170 pieces of hazardous waste: includes the collection and disposal of drug paraphernalia, alcohol containers, and bio-hazard waste removal.
  • Provided 48 hours of ATLV service: the Littervac provides the ability of 1 ambassador to service the same area it would take 2.5 ambassadors to complete on foot, providing a force multiplier in trash collection and hours of service.
  • Serviced 127 alley blocks: includes loose litter clean up, dumping of bulk items, and providing clean up after DPW household trash collection.
  • Collected 6.2 tons of bulk trash: includes providing on-call pick-ups to constituents and the collection of loose/illegally dumped bulk items.
  • Removed 200 instances of graffiti: Public infrastructure graffiti abatement includes the removal of stickers, markers, spray paint, and unauthorized posters from public benches, signs, trash cans, bridges, and bus stops.
  • Collected 27 tons of trash: Midtown provides the collection of 191 public trash cans 7 days a week and collects bags of litter cleaned up by our ambassadors in their daily deployments.

Join us to learn more about the
Maryland Avenue Bridge Mural!

Midtown Baltimore is working with female Baltimore-based artist Saba Hamidi to develop a mural for the Maryland Avenue Bridge to be installed in Spring 2024. Given the unique location of the bridge, which falls in an area that's not specific to one neighborhood or community, we have led a series of engagement sessions to establish a design that draws people in and aims to connect our communities.

During November, Midtown's team will be attending Community Association Meetings to share the project scope and a short presentation about the mural. Be sure to join us to learn more about this exciting and transformative project!

  • Bolton Hill: November 7th
  • Charles North: November 21st
  • Madison Park: November 2nd
  • Mount Vernon: November 21st

Funding support for this project is graciously supplied by our partners at the Central Baltimore Partnership.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has granted $30,000 to support our vision for the Park and North Avenue lot. Thanks to the dedication and work of the Bolton Hill Community Associations (BHCA), we're excited to help expand this project amidst the stunning twin murals by Ernest Shaw!

Collaborating with CityScape Engineering, LLC and the women-owned business EnviroCollab, we're taking a big step towards creating a 30% design plan for the next phase of development and are thrilled to be working alongside the BHCA in this partnership!
