NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER

A Message from the Acting Vice Provost

In remembrance of Tanya
Dr. Tanya Winegard, Vice Provost for Student Life
Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
This week we lift up Dr. Winegard’s memory and legacy at Creighton University and in the world, and continue to offer prayers of support for her family and all who were touched by her life. Service information honoring her life is listed below, and all are welcome to participate. You have full support to attend, including time away from the office (no need to take vacation time) to attend the service on Friday. We would like to maintain office coverage wherever possible – so please try to secure a staff or student who is not planning on being in attendance to cover phones/office or forward phones to another office that has coverage. If coverage is absolutely not available, please talk to your supervisor about closing the office to allow for all who are interested in attending.

A note from Leanna – open to engage
I have appreciated visiting each of the Student Life departments and learning more about your work – including points of pride and challenges we can all work on together for continuous improvement of the student experience – and even moreso, I have enjoyed connecting names and faces and departments and feeling the genuine commitment and sense of purpose we all share to facilitate truly transformative experiences for our students. Thank you for all that you do – and the heart with which you do it.

I have begun outreaching to student groups to get to know students and to communicate with student leaders that all of us in Student Life are actively working towards continuous improvement of the Creighton student experience and give them voice in that process. If you have an event or meeting where my presence would be helpful or welcome, please let me know how I can best support and connect.

I wish my schedule would permit me to meet with each of you individually to learn more about your story and personal and professional interests – maybe in time!? But in the meantime, if you are someone who likes to connect with colleagues on social media – I’m happy to connect with you there as well as our in-person opportunities (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).

Recognizing and uplifting world issues and marginalized identities
Conflict in the Middle East - There is so much going on in the world that weighs on our hearts and minds. Thanks to those who participated in the interfaith prayer service providing space and community to uplift those impacted directly and indirectly by the conflict in the Middle East and the horror inflicted by Hamas terrorists, and I hope your thoughts and prayers will continue to be shared. We are additionally reminded in these times of conflict to continue to uplift people of all faith and cultural traditions and stand up against all forms of Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

Cultural and identity celebrations - It’s important to recognize some of the recent celebratory and educational markers of the last month that connect with our mission to support those who are marginalized and uplift and honor the dignity of each individual, including LGBTQ+ History Month and Coming Out Day, World Mental Health Day and Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month.

And as we enter November, we begin to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Being new to Nebraska, I am interested in learning more about the indigenous tribes and history in the area.  I cannot locate a land acknowledgment, but I did find this article which shares that there are six federally recognized tribal nations in the state of Nebraska. They include the Iowa Tribe (Kansas and Nebraska), the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri (Kansas and Nebraska), the Santee Sioux Nation, and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.  If you are aware of other local or campus programming that uplifts the indigenous peoples who originated the lands on which we live and work, please share so we can all learn more and share our respect with community members.

On November 8th, we celebrate National First-Gen Celebration Day, a day to center first-generation college students and our commitment to support their success. Nationally, about half of all college students are classified as first-generation (a student whose parent(s) did not complete a four-year college or university degree). As a first-generation college student myself – who has benefited from a holistic Jesuit, Catholic education, I personally appreciate the support you provide to these students who have additional challenges and barriers to college success. Creighton’s recent recognition as a NASPA and Suder Foundation First Scholar Network institution will continue to uplift this institutional focus.

November 20th marks Transgender Day of Remembrance – an observance that honors the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

Spaces remain - International Student Banquet this Saturday, November 4

Student Life has purchased a table of 10, for the International Student Association Banquet to be held on Saturday evening, November 4th from 6-9 p.m. in the Skutt Student Center Ballroom. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for seating. Come experience food from around the world, student performances, and a fashion show.

If you are interested in attending, please email cherylroberts@creighton.edu ASAP, first come first serve availability. Feel free to include a Plus +1 in your reservation if you have someone you want to join you.

Gathering Together
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our next Student Life monthly meeting on November 2 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. in Harper 4067 or on Zoom.

A Message from Cocoa

Hello hoomans! @cocoathecounselor here.

As a doggo, life is pretty simple. Even as a workin' therapy dog, I still have plenty of time to slow down, rest, and watch the seasons change. And since I am pretty skilled at movin' slow, I have become particularly good at noticing. Noticing the new little spider web on my front porch, the wet morning grass under my paws, the cooler evening breeze on my fur, my favorite tree yellowing for fall, the golden hour before it's time for kibble. It's nothing major, but the noticing is joyful. I know you hoomans have hectic lives, but I hope you take time to notice the little things today - they just might bring you joy.

Casual Friday supports important causes
Submitted by Cheryl Roberts, Office of the Vice Provost

Student Life continues a longstanding tradition of supporting staff in turning in our professional attire on Bluejay Spirit Fridays (when appropriate) to wear jeans and Creighton spirit wear.  Staff who choose to participate are asked to donate $1 to their office pool, and that money is then rolled up and donated for all of Student Life to a non-profit cause that allows us to support community and world needs.

Money raised in September and October will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Network (PANCAN) in honor of Dr. Tanya Winegard.  PANCAN’s mission is to take bold action to improve the lives of everyone impacted by pancreatic cancer by advancing scientific research, building community, sharing knowledge, and advocating for patients.  Thank you to all who participated.

Please share interests for future donation recipients/causes and any additional feedback about this initiative with Cheryl Roberts.

Celebrate First-Gen Students on November 8

Submitted by Kailyn Tauber
Wednesday, November 8 is National First Generation Student Day! To celebrate our first-generation students on campus, we have a few events happening next week to highlight our first-gen students and celebrate their successes.

One of these efforts includes “Proud to be First” T-shirts. We have invited our first-generation students to grab a Light Blue T-shirt that says “proud to be first” and encourage them to wear it on November 8. We have also ordered Navy t-shirts for Student Life Staff to wear as supporters of first-generation students. You're invited to stop by the Student Life Suite, Creighton Hall 224, to grab a t-shirt and wear it on November 8! You do not have to identify as a first-generation student to participate!

We will have a group photo of everyone in their t-shirts on Wednesday, November 8 at 12:15pm on the Creighton Hall Front Steps

T-shirt sizes are first-come, first-served, so if you’re able to join us, please grab a shirt and hop in on the festivities of our first-generation students!

Introducing New Staff

Welcome Keenan Krick, Masters Level Therapist

Please join Student Counseling in welcoming Keenan Krick! Keenan grew up in the Omaha area and believes educational systems (when used properly) are vehicles for self- and community-improvement. Over the past 20 years, he has fed his intellectual curiosity and earned degrees in Biology (B.A. 2009), Community Counseling (M.S., 2012), and Public Health (PhD, 2022).

Outside of his work as a licensed mental health therapist, Keenan is a husband, father, yogi, and all-sport enthusiast (especially golf). Email him to coordinate a chat over coffee/tea!

Welcome Joy Al-Ameen, Assistant Director, Recreation Operations

Please join Recreation and Wellness in welcoming Joy Al-Almeen to the department! She is passionate about helping students and has done so in multiple ways from coaching, to being an adjunct professor, helping in admissions, and overseeing professional staff and student staff for the enrichment of students’ lives through the planning and coordination of intramural sports, recreational activities, leadership activities, and events.

Joy has her MBA and is currently pursuing her MDiv with a concentration in Christian Counseling. She was drawn to Creighton because it is an institution that puts God first and this position allows her to help students find work-life balance as they transition into life after school. She understands how critical these times are for students and wants to be a light in their lives as they navigate this new journey on the way to their next journey. She will oversee recreation operations, including student staff, to help enhance student life within the Recreation + Wellness department. You can reach Joy at joyking@creighton.edu.
