Let's talk SMAC!

I'm writing this on Halloween, though it doesn't feel like it. For me Halloween was last Friday when the City of Hollister held their Trunk or Treat along Downing Street. SMAC was there as usual, and the crowds seemed larger this year than ever before. I doled out candy throughout the early evening, along with my husband Al Horn, Cindy Kershaw and Christine Riutzel. It was so much fun seeing the smiles and bewilderment on the little one's faces. While it wasn't about art that night, there was a sense of connecting to the community, of giving back.

From that standpoint, Halloween is the great prelude to the holiday season we are entering. A time to be thankful for what we've been given and a time to give. With that in mind, SMAC has set up a new volunteer outreach. Board member Julie Zetina is heading it up. There are so many ways you can help SMAC. I know in the past some of you had expressed interest in helping out, but nothing came of it because we didn't have anyone to take charge of volunteers until now. We've set up a page on our website VOLUNTEER to sign up and tell us what areas in which you would like to help.

Also, keep SMAC in mind for your end-of-year giving. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, your donations are tax deductible. DONATE We will provide you with a letter for your taxes. I hope you consider helping us keep SMAC alive and thriving.

We have a new member to celebrate this month. Join me in welcoming Alex Gordon. Welcome, welcome, welcome. We are so glad you joined. And we have one renewing member, Gala Keller. We appreciate you all.

Thank you all for being a part of SMAC. We can't do this without you! So now it's time to grab a cup of coffee, sit back and let's talk SMAC!

Sales were Brisk at the 3"x3" Show

For the third year running, SMAC's 3"x3" Post-It Note Show proved to be our most popular exhibit. Each year we are amazed at how many artists submit work. This year we had more than 600 pieces of unique art for sale. As you know this show is also an annual fundraiser. So, I want to give a sincerely thanks to all of you who created art for this show and thanks also go to everyone who bought a piece. We had frames to sell with the art this year, which turned out to be a hit, too.
REMINDER: Artists' unsold 3 x 3's and checks for sold works are available for pickup at SMAC. Please pickup your work and checks by November 30th.

SMAC to host The Art of Photography Exhibit

In its upcoming art exhibit, SMAC will be featuring the work of 14 area photographers in The Art of Photography. The exhibit will run from November 3-25 at the SMAC Art Center gallery. The opening reception will be held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk on Friday, November 3, from 6-9 p.m. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Attendees may view the exhibit, tour the private studios and enjoy complimentary refreshments. The Vintage Paris Coffee kiosk will also be on site.

“This is our first fine art photography show ever,” SMAC President Tenille Blair-Neff said, “And we are excited to be bringing to the community a new way to view photography as a powerful art medium with endless possibilities.” The images selected for this show range from classic to innovative techniques, and thought-provoking to obscure with hidden meaning subject matter.

In addition, each month during their exhibits, SMAC highlights one of the many local non-profit organizations that serves the area. This month SMAC is drawing attention to The Child Abuse Prevention and Elimination Foundation (CAPE), which assists child abuse survivors and their families in receiving therapeutic counseling by providing financial grants. Literature will be available at the opening reception.

Learn to paint a Horse with Peggy Dyke

Learn to create a backlit effect through this exciting horse painting workshop Sun Splash with Peggy Dyke. Peggy has successfully taught this class many times to beginners, so if you are new to painting don’t be intimidated. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish under Peggy's teaching. This workshop is equally rewarding for an intermediate painter. You’ll not only learn Peggy’s techniques but leave with a deeper understanding of value, shadow, and backlighting.

The fee is only $50, but thanks to a grant from the City of Hollister Parks and Recreation Department, Hollister residents only pay half ($25).  With Peggy’s step-by-step instruction you will be able to complete this painting during the workshop using a quick wet-on-wet technique. A 20”x16” canvas, paints and pattern are provided, along with brushes to use during the workshop.  Sign up online at www.smac-art.org.

About the Instructor: Peggy has been an art instructor for more than 30 years, teaching acrylics, oils and graphite drawing. She loves sharing her passion and knowledge for art with others. Her own art has a unique western style, depicting animals, Native American life and cowboys. When Peggy isn’t painting or teaching, she is raising and training horses on her and her husband’s ranch in Nixa.

Join a Fun Night of Drawing Cosplayers

The next Cosplay Figure Drawing event will be November 27, 7-9 p.m. It is always the fourth Tuesday of the month, unless notified of a cancelation. If improving your drawing skills is on your to-do list, this event is for you. Each session, a model comes dressed in a different cosplay costume. Poses are timed, starting off with short periods in the beginning to get you warmed up, then, poses gradually get longer so that you have time to focus on details. Of course, you don't need to be a gamer or a comic fan or cosplayer yourself to enjoy Cosplay Figure Drawing. It's a perfect way to learn to draw clothed figures in a plethora of poses. This past month Rachel Hernandez posed as Nazuko. There were eight drawing enthusiasts who attended.  I wonder which character will show up this month.

Practicing drawing with a live model also creates muscle memory so that your skills improve and helps your mind translate three dimensional objects into two dimensional representations. This can't be learned by practicing from photos. This family-friendly drawing event is perfect for all ages, though we ask that children be supervised by an adult. It's also a safe zone, where you can explore drawing without feeling intimidated by more experienced artists. Everyone who wants to learn how to draw has to start somewhere, even if it is stick figures. What better way than in a safe, encouraging environment. I hope you'll join us.  A $10 donation to help cover the cost of the model is encouraged but not required.
