Donations needed for the Christmas Appeal

Everyone deserves a special Christmas and we need your help, to help our local struggling families this festive season.

To deliver this appeal Council works with Mossman Support Services , Mossman Elders Justice Group, Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, Goobidi Bamanga CACS LTd and Quicksilver Cruises & Wavedancer Low Isles

All funds raised will go towards Christmas hampers, to help create a Christmas meal for dozens of local families and individuals.

Upgrade Of Flagstaff Hill Walking Track

Douglas Shire Council will be upgrading one of the shire’s most popular walking tracks over the next few months.

The first stage of the upgrade will be installing 14 new prefab concrete steps on the Rex Smeal Park end of the walking track.

Upgrades will cause a temporary closure of the northern section (Rex Smeal Park end) between 13 November to 8 December.

Construction And Installation Of New Lights At Coronation Park

Douglas Shire Council was successful in obtaining funding for the replacement of the field sports lighting at Coronation Park (Mossman Showgrounds).

Work will commence Monday 23 October, and the aim is to have the light towers operational by 10 November 2023

Bilingual Storytime at Mossman Library

According to the 2021 census, our very own Douglas Shire has an amazing 55 different languages spoken in our community.

Mossman Library is offering Bilingual Storytime aimed at 0-5 year olds over the next four weeks. 

German Storytime
Tuesday 24th October at 10am

Italian Storytime
Tuesday 31 October at 10am

Kuku Yalanji Storytime
Tuesday 7 November at 10am

Japanese Storytime
Tuesday 14 November at 10am

Changed Operating Hours – Mossman Pool

A number of changes to pool operating hours will occur during the upcoming swimming carnival season.

The Pool will be closed during the following dates and times:

  • Friday, 20 October – 9am to 3pm
  • Tuesday, 7 November – 8am to 3:30pm
  • Monday, 13 November – 7:30am to 3:30pm
  • Tuesday, 14 November – 9am to 3pm
  • Friday, 1 December – 9am to 3pm
  • Tuesday, 5 December – 9am to 2:30pm
  • Friday, 8 December – 10:30am to 3pm

Douglas Fire Ban

Due to fire conditions and the weather forecasts issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, a Local Fire Ban has been issued been by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to include Douglas Shire.

A prohibition on lighting fires in the open applies for the period 0001hrs on Thursday 19 October 2023 to 2359hrs on Monday 23 October 2023

How to become a Councillor for Douglas Shire

The Department of Sate Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning has launched So you want to be a councillor? training for candidates for Local Government elections.

Candidates must declare successful completion of the training on the official nomination form.

Election day will be on Saturday, 16 March 2024.

Street Light Improvements – Reef Street & Barrier Street

Additional new streetlights will be installed along Reef Street and Barrier Street, Port Douglas.  There will be  12 new lights on Barrier Street and 4 new lights on Reef Street.

The new lights will eliminate dark spots on both roads.

Traffic control will be in place as required but we do not anticipate any major delays, and no streets will be closed off.

Installation of the street lights will commence mid-November 2023

Small Business Friendly Council’s Program

Douglas Shire Council is a proud member of the Queensland Small Business Friendly (SBF) Council’s Program.

The program aims to enhance the operating environment for small businesses by reducing red tape and helping to provide opportunities they need to thrive.

There are 8 charter elements that cover 26 charter commitments.

Progress on Mossman Pump Track

Refurbishment of the Mossman Pump Track at George Davis Park on Foxton Ave started Monday 16 October.

The track is currently closed to public while Papillion Landscapes complete the refurbishment.

The track will reopen on Saturday 28 October.
