Dear Collier County Citizen,

I have some more good news concerning our Veterans Nursing Home project.  We have enlarged the site from 18 acres to just over 20 acres.  This additional space will provide room for additional veterans services, as well as create more of campus feel for this project. We will be meeting with legislative leaders and with the Department of Veterans Affairs in early December to address any outstanding issues and secure the necessary additional state funding.  I have again included in this newsletter the listing of all our Collier County Legislative priorities for the upcoming legislative session.  My top priority is the obtaining of additional funding for the Veterans Nursing Home.

We are all concerned about traffic congestion throughout the County. I have provided the Florida Department of Transportation  “Roadwatch" report to keep you informed on road construction issues throughout the county.

We have completed construction of a new bridge in Golden Gate City on Golden Gate Parkway that was completed on time and on budget. This bridge was designed with the understanding that the entire roadway from Santa Barbara to Collier Blvd will eventually be improved to provide a more pedestrian and bike friendly corridor through Golden Gate City.

If you have any questions or concerns about the operations of County Government, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 239-252-8603 or via email at:

I greatly appreciate the opportunity to represent you on the Collier County Commission. Thank you for helping to make Collier County a great place to live, work and play.

GOLDEN GATE PARKWAY BRIDGE OVER SANTA BARBARA CANAL COMPLETED- Click to see video.

The Golden Gate Parkway over Santa Barbara Canal Bridge is now open to traffic. The bridge replacement project began in October 2022 and is substantially completed, with some punch list items remaining to be completed.

The good news for the traveling public is that the lane closures are completed, and the new four-lane bridge (two eastbound and two westbound) with 12-foot-wide sidewalks in each direction is open and usable for all.

The $3.9 million design-build project was fast-tracked due to the structural condition of the previous bridge, constructed in 1971, and near the end of its useful life. The project has stayed on time and within the approved budget.

To keep traffic flowing during construction, one side of the old bridge was removed while two-way traffic was shifted to one side. Once two lanes of the replacement bridge were constructed, traffic was shifted to the newly constructed travel lanes, and the other half of the old bridge was removed, allowing the contractor to complete construction on the additional two travel lanes.

VETERANS’ NURSING HOME UPDATE

This week, the County received anew boundary sketch and parcel description for the Golden Gate Golf Course property to be developed for the State Veterans’ Nursing Home.  This new location along the Collier Boulevard side of the golf course increases the amount of land that can be used to develop a long-term care campus to 20.07acres.  The previous property at the northwest corner of the golf course along Golden Gate Parkway was 12.7 acres.  In addition to the extra space for outpatient services facilities, the larger parcel will also allow for more green space and water features to surround the campus.

With the surveyed boundaries and parcel description, the County will now update the Memorandum of Agreement with the State to include the new property location.  With their preliminary design architect already on board, the State will use this new location to begin constructing its plans for a state-of-the-art facility for our veterans.  These early designs will be part of the construction matching fund application the State will submit to the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC, by April 2024.
