  • Finish a Master's in One Additional Year with the Accelerated MS
    • All students are invited to an informational session on the accelerated master's programs in the Department of Social Sciences on Monday, October 30 at 6 p.m. in the department commons (AOB 209).
    • There will be pizza and advisors there to explain the program and answer questions.
    • The department hosts three accelerated master's programs in Sustainable Communities, Environmental and Energy Policy, and Industrial Heritage and Archaeology. 
    • Undergraduates are also encouraged to reach out to the advisors for these programs with any questions (Chelsea Schelly, Adam Wellstead, and Laura Rouleau, respectively.)
Congratulations! 
  • Congratulations to Maya Klanderman and David Kromholz who each completed the requirements for the Peace Corps Prep certificate.  These students have been certified as ready to serve in the United States Peace Corps and now receive a certificate from the Peace Corps for their training in intercultural sensitivity, a Peace Corps work sector (e.g., environment, health, education, etc.), and professional and leadership development.  Other students who are interested in pursuing the certificate should contact Dr. Henquinet at kbhenqui@mtu.edu for more information. 
  • Congratulations to EEP PhD student Esther Acheampong for winning the American Association of Geographers Council Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Award at the West Lakes meeting of the AAG! She will join the other 8 Council Awardees from across the country to share her paper "Improving Geospatial Coastal Vulnerability Indices for Shoreline Armament Impacts on Lake Michigan’s Shoreline" at the national meeting of the American Association of Geographers this April in Hawai'i.

  • The Vernacular Architecture Forum is coming to Michigan Tech!
    • Consider submitting your work to present a paper or a poster at the annual meeting of the VAF on June 12 – June 15, 2024, which is being hosted in the Social Sciences Department next year.
    • Volunteers will be needed. Even if you don’t submit a paper, please consider volunteering to help during the cultural landscape tours on June 13-14. Social Sciences students who volunteer for the conference can attend the conference for free! Look for more info in the Spring. 
    • Students and emerging professionals may apply for the Pamela H. Simpson Presenter’s Fellowships, which offer support of up to $1000 for presenting papers and posters at VAF’s annual conference.

Undergrad and Grad Positions:
  • Full-Time Position with the Forest Service in Houghton — Due Oct 27!
    • The US Forest Service's Houghton Forestry Sciences Laboratory is hiring a full-time, permanent Support Services Specialist (GS-5/6/7 ladder position).
    • This is a great administrative job in support of the work of the research and science delivery team here, who are focused on adapting to and mitigating climate change impacts on forest ecosystems.

Grad Positions:
  • Research Assistant with Dr. Chelsea Schelly
    • Chelsea Schelly is part of a newly funded project looking at electric vehicle planning for the Tribal Nations in MI, WI, and MN.
    • "It's a big project with a lot of moving parts, but I am going to be able to recruit a graduate student to work on community engagement for input on planning and decision making."
    • The graduate student could complete an MS in Sustainable Communities or a PhD in Environmental and Energy Policy, depending on their interests and previous experience (PhD students must already have an MS).
    • The research assistant on this project absolutely must have previous experience learning about and/or engaging with Tribal communities.

  • Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines
    • This is a two-year position focused on the politics/policy of the energy transition, broadly construed.
    • The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences department at the Colorado School of Mines is a lively, multidisciplinary, and highly collegial group.
