YEAH YOU – BEAUTY PARLOUR – EKSTASIS – AUGUSTE VICKUNAITE

Thursday 9th November 7:30pm

YEAH YOU, is the Welsh duo of Elvin Brandhi and Gustav Thomas which began in the Northeast of England in 2013. Their music is the monster they find hiding under every surface from formica to fibre glass to fortune and unforgivingness; their charge is to explode its merciless tongues so as to lick the dancefloor clean of reactionary gloop.

‘… an absurd pairing of the Rilkean sublime [with] knackered EDM… Wildly inventive and genuinely weird… underground music at its best.’ Stewart Smith, Wire (413) https://www.yeahyou.family

Beauty Parlour – Cardiff musician Xavier Boucherat’s ‘Beauty Parlour’ is an ongoing exercise in world-building, incorporating bleak ambience, flooded industrials and the otherworldly broadcasts of Cold War-era numbers stations to summon a landscape in permanent crisis. Current EP ‘King of Love’ breaks with his recent meditative / generative works in favour of bloodied, body-beat rattlers and high-drama industro-wave laments, recalling early, chaotic performances at packed-out house shows. 2019 EP ‘Flattened by Corrupting Waves of Love’ is now ‘Name Your Price’ on Bandcamp, and features the previously unreleased ‘Tender Wavelengths’. Xavier also writes ‘Through The Night’, a (near) monthly newsletter covering weird gigs in South Wales and outsider music from Wales / by Welsh musicians. https://linktr.ee/Xavierbbb

Ekstasis - Generating complex modular patches backed by dramatic vocals, pushing an idiosyncratic sound more compelling that 100x synth-fuccbois. Referencing acts such Deathpile, Puce Mary and Gavillan Rayna Russom, their performance will be a tantalising mesh of improvised and conceived soundwaves utilising contact mics, citing tactility as a key element of their latest set-up. @ekstasis__

Augustė Vickunaitė is a sound performer with a background in physics science. She mainly uses reel-to-reel tape recorders to play, record, and create sounds that contain diverse field recordings, malfunctions of the old technology itself and intentional sounds/instruments recorded in natural environments. She is interested in errors of old technology, randomness of nature, aesthetics of boredom and slow art. Her performance will contain audio tape loops and found tapes collage. https://archive.org/details/@augustevi

EDDIE PRÉVOST / SILVAN SCHMID / TOM WHEATLEY

Thursday 16th November 7:30pm

Eddie Prévost / Silvan Schmid / Tom Wheatley

Omega Institute – Chris Parfitt (Solo)

Eddie Prévost drums
Silvan Schmid trumpet
Tom Wheatley bass

This new trio brings together musicians from the London and Zurich experimental improvisation scene after their paths crossed multiple times in the UK and in Switzerland, through Eddie’s long-running Friday night workshop at the Welsh Chapel in Southwark.

After working together across various projects, this trio presents their music for the first time: a buoyant and elusive jazz, driven by referential investigation. Following on from their inaugural concert at London’s Cafe OTO, and a concentrated recording process prior, they will release their debut record on Matchless Recordings in 2024. https://silvanschmid.ch http://tomwheatley.co.uk

Omega Institute

Aidan Searle – drums
Jeff Green – bass
Nigel Bryant – oscillator/effects

Electronics manipulator Nigel’s meeting with drummer Aidan at Bristol free improvisation event ‘Sounds on the Corner’ and reconnection with bassist Carl sparked the formation of a trio who began their journey into the unknown in 2019. The band’s members are active players on the free improvisation scene in Bristol but their shared love of post-punk, jazz, dub and electronics is crystallised in Omega Institute. https://prestoncapes1.bandcamp.com/album/pct-07-continuum

YA YONDER / TESS WOOD

Saturday 18th November 7:00pm-9:00pm

A night of sound, projection and movement with Ya Yonder & Tess Wood.

Tess Wood, a multidisciplinary artist, is currently immersed in research focusing on producing and delivering live art within an installation setting. In this exploration, they are collaborating with Ya Yonder to investigate the intricate connection between performance and sound. Utilising underwater footage captured during the 2022 and 2023 summer solstice on Ynys Mon, they delve into the creation of immersive live experiences, crafting moments imbued with folklore. This exploration revolves around the notion of generating new histories that encompass broader, non-binary life experiences.

With thanks to tactileBOSCH, SHIFT and CADW and Arts Council Wales for their ongoing support. https://linktr.ee/tesshonorwood

Ya Yonder is the slow-simmering but constant solo music project of artist, JT Thomas, whose sound production fluctuates between loose & freeform, rigid and overthought structures of texture & movement. Ya yonder Creates sound from sketched out half ideas that build into sonic sculptures, allowing new sounds to emerge & fade away.

Taking audio cues from SOPHIE, Arca, Aphex Twin, Low, Tyler The Creator, Jenny Hval, Oneothrix Point Never, Dean Blunt, Nosaj Thing, Lorenzo Seinni, Yves Tumor. https://linktr.ee/ya_yonder
