CIC Alum Connect

A note from Dean Tom Reichert

Dear Alumni,

Let me take a moment to share with you my excitement for our two new school directors. Both joined us this summer following two national searches.

Dr. Lyda Fontes McCartin, our iSchool director, joins us from the University of Northern Colorado. She’s an academic librarian by trade with strengths in assessment and strategic planning. Lyda is off to a great start working on reaccreditation, growing enrollment, and supporting existing partnerships and programming. Dr. Damion Waymer, an Orangeburg, S.C. native and our J-school director, joins us from the University of Alabama, where he served as senior associate dean and department head. He, too, is focused on reaccreditation, growing enrollment, and planning the J-school’s centennial.

We had some excellent finalists but these two were at the top, and had the skills and experiences necessary for our two schools to continue to thrive. Please reach out to Lyda and Damion to say “hello,” and welcome them to USC.

As always, there is much more in this edition of the CIC Alum Connect—so keep scrolling. Again, thank you for all you do to support the college and our students.

Forever to thee! …And long live the CIC!

Alumni Spotlight

Chris Davis ('94 journalism alum) met with our senior semester journalism students for an open conversation about his career in investigative reporting. Davis serves as the deputy investigations editor for The New York Times and is part of the Times Fellowship, a yearlong program for up-and-coming journalists.

When asked what makes for a standout investigative reporter he says, “No. 1 is a good story; you must understand how to scout a good story. No. 2 are the stakes at hand; the higher the stakes, the more you resonate with your reader. No. 3 is to uncover a secret and No. 4 is to find a story that is unique and local to your area.”
