Idaho Department of Education Launches New Podcast, "The Super in 10"  

The Idaho Department of Education is releasing a podcast hosted by Idaho's Superintendent of Public Instruction, Debbie Critchfield. In 10-minute episodes, Superintendent Critchfield will explore various topics related to K-12 public education in Idaho. "The Super in 10" is for Idaho parents, teachers, administrators and anyone with an interest in Idaho K-12 education. Click here to listen. 

Additional Funding Awarded to Idaho Department of Education to Assist Idaho Local Education Agencies  

The Idaho State Department of Education's Child Nutrition Department was awarded additional United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) State Administrative Expense (SAE) funding for the 23-24 school year.  The department is working on several initiatives to assist school districts in Idaho:
  • Child Nutrition has eliminated the $0.25 cents per case fee charged for receiving, storage, and delivery of USDA Foods for the remaining months of SY23-24 to reduce operational costs for districts.
  • Child Nutrition will provide up to seven scholarships to Food Service Directors who will benefit from attending the American Commodity Distribution Association (ACDA) annual conference April 21 - 24 in St. Louis, MO. Scholarship applications are due to USDAFoodsTeam@sde.idaho.gov by January 5, 2024.
  • Food Service Director trainings will be provided by the Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN) at various locations throughout the state. Contact Child Nutrition at the button below for more information about bringing this opportunity to your region.

Curricular Review Team Members Sought For Review of ELA, Health, PE

The Idaho Department of Education is requesting applications for review team members to examine curricular materials in K-12 English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA), K-12 Health and K-12 Physical Education (PE). The deadline for submission is December 17

Review team members will examine curricular materials for both their alignment to the Idaho State Content Standards and any implementation requirements. The Idaho State Department of Education team will provide training to review team members via webinar and a remote review period will follow. Idaho Career Ready Students Council Awards $19 Million in Grants to Fund Idaho CTE 

The Idaho Career Ready Students Council (ICRS) awarded more than $19 million in grants on Monday to fund Career Technical Education (CTE) programs in public and charter schools around Idaho.

The council has now awarded over $35 million in grant dollars to fund 35 total plans and programs. To date, ICRS has received 108 applications with $111 million in total funding requested for new programs, existing programs and capital projects.

Idaho districts and charters interested in applying for ICRS funds can do so here at any time. Requests may be submitted throughout the school year. Questions can be directed to program coordinator Allison Duman at aduman@sde.idaho.gov.

The Idaho Department of Education Launches New Podcast Series, "The Super in 10"   

Parents, teachers, administrators and other education stakeholders in Idaho can now connect with important issues through the Idaho Department of Education’s new podcast, “The Super in 10.” The department released the first five episodes today. Each is about 10 minutes in length. 

By way of interviews with a variety of guests, Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield will explore various topics related to K-12 public education in Idaho. Initial guests include Idaho State Police Director Col. Kedrick Wills, Marsing School District Superintendent Norm Stewart and Ryan Cantrell, chief deputy superintendent at the Idaho Department of Education.

Episodes are available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify. They are also available to stream on the Idaho Department of Education’s website as well as its YouTube channel.

Current Funding Opportunities from Idaho Humanities Council

Teachers looking to fund humanities projects or programs in 2024 can now apply for grant opportunities from the Idaho Humanities Council:
  • The Idaho Humanities Council's Spring 2024 Major Grant application is now open. Guidelines are available here. A draft application is due December 15, and the final application is due January 15
  • The next round of K-12 grants are due December 1. These grants are open to educators, schools and nonprofits or organizations with an emphasis on K-12 educators. The grants can provide funding for humanities-related field trips, teacher workshops, book purchases or conference attendance costs. 
  • Action grants and Humanities for All grants are open all year, and are due for review on the 1st of every month. With award sizes of up to $1,000 and a quick turnaround of two weeks, these grants provide support for public humanities projects and programs.

Idaho State University Offering $200 PD Credit 

Idaho State University and the Albion Center for Professional Development are giving every educator a $200 credit to be used towards professional development courses in the ISU catalog. To receive your credit, please create a free Albion Center account and the credit will be automatically added. Each course costs $55 per credit and there are no course fees. Participants do not have to be ISU students to take PD courses.

ISU and the Albion Center have created a dedicated page to walk applicants through creating the account and taking advantage of their $200 credit. Registration must be completed by December 31.  Learn more and register at the button below.

Honoring Idaho Teachers Who Served 

In observance of Veteran's Day, the Idaho Department of Education recently honored veterans who've served our country and then gone on to continue their careers in Idaho education. 

This week we're featuring:
  • Boise School District welding instructor and retired Air Force Master Sergeant Tyler Merryman
  • Collister Elementary School teacher and retired Air Force Senior Master Sergeant Dr. Brian Marinelli.

For Parents

Empowering Parents Grant Application Portal Now Open for Additional Funding for Families and Students

The Idaho State Board of Education has announced that the Empowering Parents grant application portal will open today. 

Eligible parents or guardians can use the grant funds to purchase education-related services and resources on the Empowering Parent online marketplace such as tutoring services, internet connectivity, computer hardware and software, instructional materials and more. Nearly $30 million will be available this year, enough to fund just under 29,000 grants at $1,000 per student and a maximum of $3,000 per family.

Students attending Idaho public and private schools and students who are homeschooled are all eligible. The program applies to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. It is a rolling application period that will remain open until all of the funding has been distributed.

Families who received grants previously are eligible again, but they must reapply.
