New CITP Research Reveals Discrimination in Facebook Job Ads
Discrimination through Image Selection by Job Advertisers on Facebook, a research paper by CITP faculty member Aleksandra “Sasha” Korolova, an assistant professor of computer science and public affairs, and CITP graduate student Varun Nagaraj Rao, has found that the potential for gender discrimination in job ads exists on Meta — Facebook’s owner — despite past measures taken by the tech giant to prevent it. Their work is featured in Researchers Korolova and Nagaraj Rao Find Discrimination Continues to Plague Facebook Ads.

- An ongoing Princeton University-led investigation into whether rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft disclose customer fare information to drivers has been featured in a More Perfect Union video. Leading The Workers' Algorithm Observatory project is Princeton CITP associated faculty member Andrés Monroy-Hernández, an assistant professor of computer science whose team includes CITP Fellow Dan Calacci. The team’s research so far has revealed that in some cases, a driver can receive less than half the fare paid by customers; in one case, Uber collected as much as 53 percent. The public - including rideshare drivers - may learn more about the study and contribute to the ongoing research via the FairFare tool, which Calacci said “shines a light onto the conditions of algorithmically-managed workers.”
- Economic valuation of temperature-related mortality attributed to urban heat islands in European cities, coauthored by CITP associated faculty member Elie Bou-Zeid, was published in Nature Communications.
