Dynamic Delegates and Dialogue!
Over 180 students from 25 area high schools participated in the first 2 of 3 Civitas Model UN events this past Saturday at Webster University. There was a great variety of topics in the resolutions presented for each session. Both groups discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war with passion and impressive knowledge. Excellent role-playing was on display the entire day, earning applause and occasionally raucous laughter from other delegates. However, when it came to voting on contentious political topics, countries stayed true to their governments, resulting in many resolutions not passing. Humanitarian topics fared much better. Session A passed resolutions to provide funding for feminine hygiene products for women and girls in Ghana and to improve accessibility to education in less economically developed countries. Session B agreed to help the people of Fiji with access to clean water, but rejected Denmark's request for improving the health care in their country. Session B also overwhelmingly agreed to reign in China's control of the South China Sea which included renaming it the Southeast Asia Sea. Impressive, collaborative discussion took place during caucus time in both sessions. Thanks to all delegates and their teachers for a great day! Session C MUN coming up!
The final HSMUN session of 2023 is Saturday, December 2. The signup form is open for students attending Session C from 9:00 am until noon at Webster University. It will close the evening of Thursday, November 30.
Resolutions for Session C are due by midnight on Tuesday, November 28. Please email finished resolutions to Stephanie (gavinstephanie89@gmail.com). Resolutions can be viewed on the Civitas website as we get them added to the Master Copy. It's always a good idea for delegates to review resolutions in advance, if time allows. Knowing the specific topics that will be discussed can help you prepare for asking questions, suggesting amendments, and voting.

Meet a real UN Peacekeeper on January 27, 2024!
Civitas has scheduled its first event for 2024 on Saturday, January 27 from 10:00 am until noon at Crossroads College Preparatory School. We are pleased to have Roel Harryvan, a former UN Peacekeeper through the Royal Netherlands Army, scheduled to talk to students. Roel and his family have lived in St. Louis since 1995 so Roel could be the Honorary Consul for the Netherlands, his home country, covering Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. Join us to hear Roel talk about all of his adventures, both as a UN Peacekeeper and as an Honorary Consul. Roel will share updates of current UN Peacekeeping endeavors and answer any questions you have about his past and current experiences working to bridge cultures and foster peace.
