NOQAZO WINS OVERALL BEST PRESENTER AWARD AT THE 10TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL SCIENCES 2023 IN BANGKOK

A Public Relations and Communications Master’s student, Zizipho Noqazo, is flying the Durban University of Technology (DUT) flag high after winning the Overall Best Presenter Award, from over 80 presenters from more than 15 different countries, at the 10th International Conference on Social Sciences 2023. It was recently held  in Bangkok, Thailand. The conference took place both in-person and virtually.

Natashya Kodituwakku, the Conference Secretariat congratulated Noqazo  on her outstanding achievements at the 10th International Conference on Social Studies (ICOSS 2023). She said that Noqazo had impressed the audience with her insightful research and dynamic presentation.

SECOND-YEAR JOURNALISM STUDENT, SIHLE NZIMA BAGS HIS FIRST ACTING ROLE ON MZANSI WETHU’S TELENOVELA, SIBONGILE AND THE DLAMINI’S

A second-year Journalism student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Sizwe Nzima recently bagged his first acting role on Mzansi Wethu’s telenovela; Sibongile and The Dlamini’s. This exciting local telenovela airs every Monday to Wednesday at 18h30 on Mzansi Wethu (DStv channel 163).

The 24-year-old aspiring actor, Sizwe Nzima plays ‘Government’, a troublesome young man who was recently released from jail.

He has been yearning for this opportunity for a long time and he hopes this is a start of many great things. He grew up in the rural areas of Nquthu in KwaZulu-Natal and his dream was to one day become a famous actor.

DUT DEPARTMENT OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM CELEBRATES ITS ANNUAL AFRICAN FOOD FESTIVAL

It was a celebration and appreciation of different African traditions as guests were treated to an African-themed sensory experience at this year’s annual African Food Festival organised by the second-year Catering Management students from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism at the DUT Hotel School on 07 November 2023.

The festival was coordinated by the Catering Management Programme Team Leader, Dr Sasi Gangiah who is passionate about decolonisation of culinary curricula.

This year’s event was themed “Going Back to Our Roots” and reflected the decolonisation and an appreciation of African cuisine which included the exhibition of African dance, song, and attire.

NAVIGATING INTERNATIONAL WATERS: DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING COIL PROJECT

The Department of Financial Accounting at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted a remarkable event, allowing first-year Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) students to showcase their Collaborative Online Interactive Learning (COIL) projects, aligning with DUT’s ENVISION2030 goals.

Held at Coastlands Hotel in Musgrave, the workshop was more than just a presentation; it was a glimpse into the future. The COIL project, which spanned six weeks in semester 2, saw pairs of DUT students teaming up with students from the University of Colima (UCOL) in Mexico in a unique international collaboration.

IT WAS A CELEBRATORY MOMENT AS THE SRC ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION WINNERS RECEIVED THEIR PRIZES

It was a celebratory moment as the Student Representative Council (SRC) and Student Governance and Development unit at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) handed out prizes for the SRC Essay Writing competition. The session took place at the DUT Open House building on Thursday, 02 November 2023.

This was the first Essay Writing Competition done by the 2022/23 SRC in collaboration with the Student Governance and Development unit. The competition was under the SRC students as champions of the DUT Living Values campaign. The competition topic was ‘Reflecting the DUT Living Values through our Daily Behaviour’.

DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Simangele Zuma spoke to Thabo Lethabo Sikhakhane, intern at the Disability Rights Unit and Central Housing Executive President.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?  

A: “I work as an intern at the Disability Rights Unit and I am also the Central Housing Executive President under Student Housing and Residence Life unit. I am an advocate for students with disabilities and I provide mobility services on a daily basis.
