Diamonds or Water

I recently heard that diamonds are more abundant in the universe than water. In fact, studies suggest that “diamond rain may be much more prevalent in the universe than previously thought.” Stable bodies of liquid water, on the other hand, are known to only exist on Earth. For some reason though, we in this planet have come to place more value on diamonds than on life-giving water.

It is so easy to take for granted whatever is in front of me. (And that is not to negate the grave injustices and inequities that deprive our communities of the dignity we deserve. Perhaps, both things can be true at once.) I just sometimes notice myself yearning for diamonds elsewhere. I am sure this impulse is not unique to me. But every time I’m with Pedro, our families, and our communities, I am convinced that we are where we are supposed to be. There’s a lake of tenderness in front of us. May we never overlook the shimmer it offers and the sustenance it provides us day-by-day. (SH)

The Roundup

  • unseen has been shortlisted for the IDA Documentary Awards. We are humbled to be one of 17 feature films out of “669 total submissions in all categories from 48 countries.” We honor every film that came out this year because they are just as worthy of a spot in this list.

  • “We’ve never experienced a film like unseen before. It’s a wildly original multi-year labor of love by one of cinema’s most innovative emerging creators, Set Hernandez” – legendary filmmakers, Pamela Yates and Paco de Onis.

  • “A unique viewing experience in which the fluid intimacy and mutual respect between filmmaker and protagonist is absolutely palpable on screen. The film provokes a visceral reimagining of what it means to make cinema accessible, and you will walk away with a new perspective” – Andrea Alarcon, Sundance Institute
