November 2023 Newsletter

It's perfect weather to get around by bike,
and we love seeing so many people out and about.

So join us in our quest to make Phoenix a friendlier,
more welcoming place to ride a bike 💫

McDowell Road 'Revitalization' Project

We thank Laura Pastor for hosting a second public meeting this past November 8th, and thank all of you who showed up to support the project's stated goal of:

  • Creating a safer and more inviting area for people walking or riding bicycles to locations along the corridor
Unfortunately once again the city presented two options that do not include bike lanes, and a third with unprotected bike lanes on this arterial street 🤯

We don't think this is good enough, and if you agree please let the city know via their short survey which closes at the end of the month 📝

More info on the project website, and remember you can always contact the Streets Department directly at: streetsp@phoenix.gov.

Last chance to say 'yes' to expanded boundary and inventory

The Phoenix Street Transportation Department is developing a strategy to expand the city’s Shared Micromobilty Program.

The survey is available in English and Spanish, and will be open through November 15

Giving people options to get around without depending on cars is essential to creating a sustainable and pleasant environment, and that's what we're here for!

Second Saturday Ride!

If you’re ready to get back on the bike after a summer hiatus, there’s no better way to welcome Phoenix’s bike season than by joining the PSP Second Saturday Ride.

Ride departs Short Leash Hot Dogs, located at 4221 N 7th Ave., on Saturday, November 11 at 9 a.m.

Route is still to be determined, but will have a break near the half way point and end back at Short Leash. Many of us stick around for a bite and a drink and hang out for a while. Rollover Doughnuts & Short Leash Hot Dogs has a big variety of food options, great coffee, extensive beer selection, and a full bar. Plenty of choices for after the ride.

November 19, 2023, is the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. It’s a day when people the world over honor those lost to road deaths and call for justice.

We will not be hosting a ride that Sunday, but please share where you rode, who you biked for, and then tag us on social media and we will share them in our stories.

Oak Street Improvement Project concerns

It was brought to our attention that several parts of the Oak Street Improvement Project appear to have been forgotten about, including a section on the City's own High Injury Network.

We have sent a letter to the City Manager, which you many find here.

If you aware of any other incomplete projects or gaps, please let us know.

Willo Luminaria

Last year hundreds of revelers on lit-up bicycles from all over Phoenix rode for over an hour around every 300 block of the neighborhood! Holiday decorations and street luminaria provided the festive lights to guide us all into the night!

Following on from a successful Luminaria Bike Ride last year, we'll be riding again on Saturday December 23rd. Save the date!

Then an annual Phoenix Spokes People membership is for you! We are a group of urban bicyclists dedicated to making Phoenix a friendlier, more welcoming place to ride bikes. We believe cycling should be an easily accessible form of transportation for people of all ages, incomes and abilities, and we're working hard to make that come true.

For $20 a year ($15 for students) you can support our advocacy and community building and help cover costs like this newsletter and ride insurance. Thanks for your support!

Bike Valet Returns!

Phoenix fall means plenty of events to ride to, including the Phoenix Downtown Farmers Market and Phoestivus.

Phoenix Spokes People has consistently provided a much-needed Bike Valet service at these events.

It works just like valet for cars. Attendees drop their bikes with us, and:

  • A PSP volunteer takes the bike, stores it on a portable rack, and tags it with a claim check.
  • Each claim check has a unique number, and a portion for the bike owner to keep.
  • When the bike owner leaves the event they exchange their claim ticket stub for their bike. Easy!
But we need volunteers to keep Bike Valet going strong. Even if you have only an hour to give, we can promise you a fun time giving back to the local bike community. You'll meet fellow bicyclists and sometimes we even get event tickets, food, or swag (though we can't guarantee these perks).

Two upcoming opportunties:
Whether you're an event venue who is interested in having bike valet at your event or an amazing person who wants to volunteer to man the valet table, contact us at valet@phoenixspokespeople.org.
