Thank you to our Veterans and Service Members
Free Park Passes for Veterans!  Rep Mike Cameron, Commissioner of Veterans Patricia Ross, and I took this photo together at the Veteran's Day Ceremony at the Capitol this week, to recognize our work exploring ways to provide free state park passes for veteran's and military service members.
Veterans Day is a time to thank those who are serving in our military or have served and are still with us.  We appreciate and honor your sacrifice and service.

Military Outdoors - Healing in Nature

This past year I have worked with Vedia Barnett of Ga Sierra Club, Georgia Commissioner of Veterans Patricia Ross, Rep Mike Cameron, and Grant Glinecki of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators, to explore ways for Veterans and their families to find healing in nature.  We are also working to remove barriers, like transportation and cost,  for veterans that prevent them from experiencing the full benefits of time spent in nature.  We would love to have free state park passes for our veterans!

National Warrior Call Day on Nov. 12, 2023

I woke up this morning and read this important opinion piece in our Atlanta paper:

There is a “
troubling reality in which veterans die by suicide at a much higher rate than civilians. Per a recent USA Today report, those figures are especially troubling for young men, where the unadjusted rate of veteran suicide of those age 18 to 34 increased by a staggering 95 percent over the last 20 years. For veterans under 45 – predominantly those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan – suicide is the second leading cause of death.”

Please read and participate in this Warrior Call Campaign.

The Contradictions of War

While driving today, I listened to Fresh Air with Terry Gross, on NPR, with this  thought provoking interview, which I found salient as the United States is involved in support two wars.

Elliot Ackerman served five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, during which time, he says, he witnessed the best and worst that human beings are capable of. Originally broadcast Nov. 11, 2021.
