Stories from UR Nursing's NP Alumni

Nicholas Wodo '14N, '19N (MS) became a Pediatric NP to make a difference in children’s lives, and to “help them grow and live the healthiest lives possible.” As an NP in the pediatric emergency department at Golisano Children’s Hospital, he has made that goal a reality. Read more.

Jenna Gonillo Davis '10N, '15N (MS) found her niche in the Neuromedicine ICU at Strong Memorial Hospital. Becoming an adult-gerontology acute care NP helped her discover new possibilities in patient care and paved the way for her to be a principal investigator in neurocritical care research. Read more.

Kai Mbeke '22N (MS) has been serving the Buffalo region as a psychiatric nurse for nearly 20 years. A recent Patrick P. Lee Foundation Scholar who earned her master's in the Family Psychiatric Mental Health NP program, Mbeke is proud to be part of the solution to mental health workforce shortages in Western New York. Veterans Day Ceremony Honors Loretta Ford's Service

Loretta Ford, EdD, RN, PNP, FAAN, FAANP, founding dean of the University of Rochester School of Nursing and co-founder of the first nurse practitioner program, was honored for her service as a World War II Army Air Corps Nurse veteran at a ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery. Read more.

UR Nursing Receives AACN Innovations Award

The UR School of Nursing was named a recipient of the American Associate of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) 2023 Innovations in Professional Nursing Education award, in recognition of the School's efforts to re-envision traditional models for nursing education and lead programmatic change.

The School of Nursing was also featured recently by Wolters Kluwer in a case study on how the School reinvented its nursing programs through an innovative competency-based, active learning approach.

Chen Zhang Recognized for HIV/AIDS Research

Assistant Professor Chen Zhang, PhD, MPH received the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care’s (ANAC) 2023 Researcher/Impact Award. She was honored at the annual ANAC Conference in New Orleans and spoke about her latest work in the presentation "Understand Structural Racism Against HIV-Affected Black/African Americans" on Oct. 26. Read more.

Nursing, Data Science Researchers Earn Mini-Grant for Postpartum Depression Study

UR School of Nursing is among six schools to receive funding from the AACN's All of Us Research Program, in partnership with the NIH. The award will support a project by Assistant Professors Dillon Dzikowicz, PhD, RN, PCCN, and Caitlin Dreisbach, PhD, RN, and undergraduate data science student Carol Li, to assess whether heart rate during pregnancy, measured by data from Fitbits, can predict postpartum depression. Conversation with the Dean
Join UR Nursing Dean Lisa Kitko, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN on Dec. 14 for a virtual discussion with Tener Veenema ’92N (MS), ’93N (PMC), ’99M (MPH), ’01M (PhD), on how nurses can be actively involved in improving health outcomes during disasters and public health emergencies. Veenema, a senior scientist at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, will expand on her more than 35 years of expertise in public health preparedness. The discussion will be moderated by Arnice Jackson ’11N.
