Dear Healthy Aging Readers,

Where were you 10 years ago? I had just returned to the Island after working and living in London for 3 years and was becoming reacquainted with all things American. I was so delighted to come back to our beautiful Island and immerse myself in my next chapter. In some ways, this seems like yesterday but also a lifetime ago. Sound familiar?

More importantly, looking back 10 years ago, it was in 2013 that the Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard task force was founded by Paddy Moore, a visionary who understood the need to ensure our Island was truly age-friendly. She brought her vision, expertise, and energy to engage our community to get involved with planning for the future, identifying what was needed to be able to age on-island and how to bring the necessary resources to the Island.

So this month is a time of celebration and thankfulness here at Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard as we reflect on the past and look forward to what needs to be done in the next ten years. Read on to learn what we are doing to celebrate this milestone, how you can upskill your aging knowledge, and how you can get involved.

I’m thankful for the continuing support of our community and the opportunity to be part of Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard. I’ll be thinking of all that we have done together – and what still remains to be done - throughout this month and especially when I count my blessings on Thanksgiving Day.

Best,
Cindy

Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard’s 10 Year Anniversary Celebration – A metaphor for Aging and the Cycle of Life

The rain cleared only minutes before our gathering on Tuesday, Oct 10 at 10 am at the entrance to the State Forest, a reminder of the bittersweet nature of life – unexpected stormy moments and clearing skies. We gathered together to reflect on HAMV’s past 10 years as well as contemplate our future.

Planting 10 trees seemed the perfect metaphor for both our 10-year anniversary as well the aging journey we all share. We encourage you to visit this cluster of trees (right across from the deer check-in building on Barnes Road) and enjoy reading the lovely tributes that those who sponsored these trees requested.

We are grateful to the numerous individuals who sponsored these trees through donations to Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard, the landscapers who donated the trees – Middletown Nursey, Jardin Mahoney and Vineyard Gardens, and to Conor Laffey, Superintendent of the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest for his support.

More information on this event can be found here.

An Opportunity to Learn, Share, and Get Involved – Our Aging Summit is an afternoon you don’t want to miss!

Are you over 60, living on MV?
Do you know someone 60?
Are you a community leader who is responsible for the future of Martha's Vineyard?

If you answered yes, join us at the HAMV Community Mobilization Summit on Aging

It's up to all of us to ensure the island we love is equipped to support us as we age.

Come listen, learn, and share your perspective. Come for all or just part of the day. By working together we can continue to live and thrive on Martha's Vineyard!

Please plan to join us and register now.

Did I mention we'll enjoy a fresh boxed lunch from Black Sheep, snacks, and beverages, with plenty of time to talk to each other throughout the afternoon?

Supporting Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard – Our End-of-the-Year Fundraising Campaign

For the first time ever, we are undertaking an organized, comprehensive fundraising campaign to support HAMV’s future efforts. Over the past 10 years, we have grown and evolved, expanding our reach with numerous programs, continuing to advocate for Older Adults, planning for the future, and bringing together organizations and individuals across the island to address the needs of Older Adults as well as to acknowledge and celebrate our Older Adults' contribution to our Island.

Here at HAMV, we believe to enrich the life of any Older Adult is to enrich the very fabric of our Island community. We exist to promote healthy aging with education, advocacy, and initiatives designed to enhance the safety, mobility, and independence of anyone who is aging on any main street or dirt road of Martha’s Vineyard.

As we look to the future, HAMV will continue to be a catalyst to ensure we have the services necessary for the continuum of care and fostering community engagement for Older Adults. Every day is an opportunity to make Martha’s Vineyard an age-friendly Island.

The Older Adult population is growing, and we need your help to grow to meet their needs. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to HAMV before the close of the year. You may send a check to Healthy Aging Martha's Vineyard, 111 Edgartown Road, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568, or donate online at www.hamv.org. Because when it comes to aging, we’re all in this together.

Thank you to Joyce Stiles-Tucker for an amazing run as Director of Tisbury Senior Center. Best of luck on your next chapter. We are grateful for your service.
