Reminder to "Fall back" on the clock for daylight saving this Sunday!

Dear <<First Name>>,

Did you know that October has been proclaimed as Library Month and October 23rd as School Library Day in B.C.?

It’s always great to visit a library, especially in my alma mater! I had a fortunate opportunity to visit Sir Sandford Fleming Elementary, the school that I went to, and present the proclamation.

Thank you to Principal Teena Smith and Teacher Librarian Michelle Valdecantos for such a great tour to highlight their innovative pod learning layouts, Outdoor Classroom Gardener program, and their Learning Commons activities.

When I was joining in on the student activities and seeing all the little faces filled with wonder, they reminded me of my fond memories of the school libraries that fostered my curiosity and creativity.

School libraries inform and empower students in elementary, middle and secondary schools throughout our province. Thank you so much to teacher-librarians who make our school libraries a vital source of information, resources and opportunities for learners.

It is my honour to attend the 2023 BC Cabinet & First Nations Leaders’ Gathering in Vancouver this week. The opportunity to meet directly with First Nations leaders, Indigenous organizations and youth from across BC is so valuable to me.

Reconciliation is not just a word; it has to be an action. These plenary sessions and one-on-one meetings continue building a path together that forwards reconciliation and the rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

I encourage all orders of government to continue the conversations and collaboration. My Ministry is providing resources through UBCM to help build relationships between local governments and First Nations: Community to Community Program!

Learn more at ubcm.ca/c2c. Application deadline is Dec. 1st.

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

More small-scale, multi-unit homes coming to B.C., zoning barriers removed

The province is introducing new housing legislation to deliver more small-scale, multi-unit housing for people, including townhomes, triplexes and laneway homes, and fix outdated zoning rules to help build more homes faster.

Constructing mostly high-rise condo towers or single-family homes means B.C. isn’t building enough small-scale multi-unit homes that fit into existing neighbourhoods and give people more housing options that are within reach.

The proposed legislation and forthcoming regulations will permit one secondary suite or one laneway home (accessory dwelling unit) in all communities throughout B.C.

“BC is set to empower internationally educated professionals” and other things people are saying about our government’s new credential recognition legislation

On October 23, Minister of State for Workforce Development Andrew Mercier announced new credential recognition legislation to make it easier for skilled professionals who move to B.C. to put their skills to good-use and fill in-demand jobs.

“Introducing fairness, transparency, efficiency and accountability to the recognition of foreign credentials in critical professions will go a long way to opening up a whole new pool of human talent for B.C. businesses. It will allow new immigrants to put their skills to good use, drive productivity and economic success, while also generating tax revenue to deliver critical public services.” -  Fiona Famulak, President & CEO BC Chamber of Commerce

“This is such great news! Thank you [Premier Eby] and [Minister of State Mercier] for being willing to tackle this complex, but important, work. The positive impact on immigrants as well as BC economy and society at large will be enormous.”- Olga Stachova, M.O.S.I.A.C.

BC Hydro continues to keep rates low, below inflation

Families and businesses in British Columbia will continue to see affordable, stable electricity rates under BC Hydro’s latest application to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC).

For the sixth consecutive year, BC Hydro is applying for a rate increase below the rate of inflation.

BC Hydro is applying to the BCUC for a 2.3% rate increase that would take effect on April 1, 2024. If approved, it would add approximately $2 per month to the average residential customer’s bill.

Increased wages recognize early childhood educators’ vital role

Early childhood educators (ECEs) will receive another hourly raise, starting on Jan. 1, 2024, to support the essential work they do to educate and care for young children.
