Eagerly awaited Boomers & Beyond report launch is here.

After more than 12 months in the making, the time to launch the Boomers and Beyond Australian research by Legacy Foresight (part of Legacy Futures) is upon us.

Across the world, baby boomers are a significant opportunity for Gifts in Wills fundraisers, and a vital source of future income. This research piece has been undertaken in Australia, UK and the Netherlands, offering a holistic view of the marketplace and projections – but also individual national forecasts through to 2040.

For Include a Charity members, the Australian research encompasses:

  • Research into the number, profile and wealth of Australian boomers and Gen X.

  • Quantitative consumer research into their attitudes and expectations around gifts in Wills.

  • An update of long-term forecasts for the Australian bequest sector to 2040.

Listen to Ashley Rowthorn, of Legacy Futures, and his UK colleagues Anna Turner and Jon Franklin, launch and share details of this vital research at this special Include a Charity webinar, just before the report is issued to members.

SCAM ALERT!!! Watch out and report to Include a Charity

There is a VERY sophisticated scam doing the rounds to dupe Gifts in Wills fundraisers into thinking they have been left a bequest to their charity.

Our good friends at Bequest Assist - and some of our IAC members - have sent a warning email around on this - but in case you missed it here are the top line details:

Here is an example of the email that some charities are receiving, noting that it seems to be slightly adapted and some names changed:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I write to confirm if you received any message from my late uncle's attorney in person of Mr. Oritz Zub, regarding a donation made by my late uncle to your organization in which he embedded in his last Will which was read last month in the presence of family members.

Kindly confirm this to us as I and my sister are worried since we as family members have not received any message or appreciation note from your organisation, expressing your joy for the donation gift and we think "allis not well". But if you have been contacted by Mr. Oritz Zub and you have received the donation, I pray you use it judiciously to the benefit of the needy.

I await your swift response to this request for confirmation.

Sincerely,
Reginald Brown.

Some charities reported that they ended up speaking to a person on the phone purporting to be a solicitor in London or from an investment bank in Belgium. Others were put onto a contact in China. Some charities reported that they thought perhaps some of the confusing communications were due to a language barrier which prevented them from seeing the scam earlier. Email communications were also received from the “bank” involved by some charities.

Some charities reported receiving copies of a forged will of varying lengths and others also received a fake death certificate. We have now seen three different fake death certificates sent to three different charities – all of varying levels of persuasiveness.

NB: Include a Charity has escalated this scam problem to the FIA and the Code & Complaints team to investigate and highlight to all fundraisers.
