SESSION SPOTLIGHT: WHEN POLLUTION IS PERSONAL
PART I:  Don't Let Waste Go To Waste

Home is where we produce most of our trash – about three pounds per adult per day. What do we do with all this stuff? How can we create less waste in the first place by refusing, reducing, reusing, repurposing and recycling — so we don’t let waste go to waste?  From throw-away containers, to worn out household goods, to unwanted food, our panelists show how these waste streams can be redirected to good use and reused as materials that feed the circular economy.

Featuring
Sarah Dearman has spent her career collaborating for good, from corporate to government to nonprofit sustainability initiatives. Sarah is the Chief Innovation Officer for The Recycling Partnership, a national nonprofit advancing a circular economy by building a better recycling system. Previously, she lead sustainable packaging at Coca-Cola, as well as sustainability initiatives for Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources.
Donn Githens is the President & CEO of Goodwill Industries-Manasota, a nonprofit dedicated to closing the skills gap and addressing inequities, and also one of the largest durable goods recyclers in the country. Donn has 17 years experience in the Goodwill network, leading donated goods retail, operations, marketing, and real estate.
Emily Grant is the Senior Program Manager for the MEANS (Matching Excess And Needs for Stability) Database, an online platform connecting those with excess food, like grocery stores, co-ops, and restaurants, with nearby emergency food providers. She has over 10 years combined experience in Florida's food system.
Mike Kelcourse is an innovator with 20 years experience in the waste management industry. His Jacksonville-based company Sunshine Organics and Compost collects food, agricultural, and forestry waste, processes it into organic compost and biochar, then returns it to the soil while making the environment and local communities healthier.
Zack Rasmussen is the farm manager at Chiles Hospitality's Gamble Creek Farms growing a unique variety of organic herbs, produce, and flowers using permaculture, composting and oyster shell recycling. Practices to reduce and recycle restaurant waste are mainstream at all of Chiles Hospitality’s restaurants.
PART II:  Get Efficient and Get Clean With Energy

Homeowners play a big role in reducing carbon pollution because our homes consume more than half of all Florida’s electricity. Improving home energy efficiency to reduce energy use and installing home rooftop solar for clean renewable energy is easier than you think. Energy experts on policy, financing, solar, transportation, and home improvement, provide myth-busting advice for transitioning your lifestyle to the carbon and cost savings of efficient and renewable energy.

Featuring
Susan Glickman is an energy consultant to non-profits such as ReThink Energy Florida and Florida Clinicians for Climate Action, Natural Resources Defense Council, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, and the Union of Concerned Scientists. She was named to Florida Trend’s Inaugural 500 Most Influential Business Leaders. Susan serves on the board of Solar & Energy Loan Fund and initiated the Tampa Bay Regional Resilience Coalition.
Bill Johnson is a Sarasota native and the founder and President of Brilliant Harvest, a state certified solar contractor serving residential and commercial clients on the west coast of Florida. Bill is certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners as a Solar Photovoltaic installation professional and currently serves as Treasurer of the Florida Solar Energy Industry Association.
Duanne Andrade is the Executive Director of the Solar and Energy Loan Fund, a CDFI/Green Bank based in Florida. As a passionate advocate for social, environmental, and economic equity, she has worked extensively with innovative nonprofit microfinance models focused on lifting vulnerable populations out of poverty as well as for-profit financing models to address financing gaps for small businesses.
Amber Whittle is a Sarasota native and currently the Executive Director of Southface Sarasota, a resilience nonprofit focused on energy efficiency, climate change, and social equity and health. Southface Sarasota helps local nonprofits reduce utility costs and reinvest those savings into their programs.
Lee Hayes Byron is a native Sarasotan and the Director for Sarasota County UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability. She previously served as Sarasota County Sustainability Manager. She has national energy policy experience working as Coordinator of the U.S. Climate Action Network in Washington, D.C.
