UNINCORPORATED DEKALB VOTERS

Voters in unincorporated DeKalb will be voting on increasing three low income Senior Tax Exemptions, two municipal, one for schools. I sponsored these three pieces of legislation, which the Tax Commissioner initiated and  wrote for us.  Please vote YES!
Current DeKalb Homestead Exemptions
  • Homestead exemptions provide a significant reduction in annual property taxes and are
available to individuals who own and reside in a home in DeKalb County.
  • Applications may be submitted online at dekalbtax.org/file-homestead-exemption, by mail, drop box, or in person at the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner’s Office.
  • DeKalb County offers senior citizens age and income-based tax exemptions starting at age 62 to reduce their tax burden, if approved.
  • Since 1988, current County senior exemptions, not including school taxes, have not been modified or updated in over 34 years.
  • Exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the average inflation rate has been 2.74% per year since 1988, which amounts to a cumulative increase of 150%.
  • The proposed 150% increase to the income eligibility requirements for the County’s senior property homestead exemptions will help vulnerable, working seniors who must supplement their social security retirement income to make ends meet.
  • These seniors typically do not qualify for a senior exemption because the income limit requirement is too low.
  • The upward adjustment in the income limit requirements will assist more seniors who are vulnerable to a tight housing market, rising property assessments,  rising consumer price increases, and unprecedented inflation.
  • We want to encourage and enable seniors who have a potential source of accumulated wealth – their home – to age in place and meet their annual tax obligations.

CITY OF DECATUR VOTERS

Decatur Legislators Announce Municipal Property Tax Relief Proposals on the November Ballot

City of Decatur voters will have an opportunity to decide this November on proposed municipal homestead exemptions estimated to result in an aggregate annual savings of $1,050,000.

The package of property tax relief bills was co-sponsored in the House by Representatives Omari Crawford, Karla Drenner, Becky Evans and Mary Margaret Oliver, and by Senator Elena Parent in the Senate. "As legislators serving constituents in the City of Decatur, we encourage you to vote in the upcoming special election on November 7th," announced the delegation members.

The details of the City’s General Homestead Exemptions, if adopted by the voters, would result in the following:
• House Bill 632 - Increases the General Homestead Exemption (GH-1) for all residential owner-occupied properties from $25,000 to $40,000; and,
• House Bill 633 - Increases the General Homestead Exemption (GH-2) for residential owner-occupied properties for persons 65 years of age or older from $10,000 to $15,000;
• House Bill 634 - Allows for resident property owners on Decatur Land Trust properties a homestead exemption similar to the City’s general homestead exemption; and
• House Bill 635 - Increases the General Homestead Exemption (GH-3) for residential owner-occupied properties for persons 62 years of age or older whose Georgia net taxable household income does not exceed $50,000 from $15,000 to $25,000 and adjust the household income limit from $50,000 to $60,000.

The proposed City Schools of Decatur homestead exemption contained in Senate Bill 288 would apply in the amount of $200,000.00 of the assessed value of the homestead for residents of that school district who are between 65 and 69 years of age and whose federal adjusted gross income, as well as the federal adjusted gross income of the spouse of such resident and all other members of the family who also reside at such homestead, does not exceed $62,000.00. It would also provide a homestead exemption from city school district property taxes in the amount of $200,000.00 of the assessed value of the homestead for residents of that school district who are 70 years of age or older regardless of income.
