We hope this message finds you well. As we dive into another exciting week of learning and exploration, we wanted to share some important updates and remind you of our upcoming events. We just added a pop-up presentation for Monday, November 13th at 2:30.  It will follow our

New Presentation: "Sorting Through the Chaos of The Israeli-Hamas War"
Date & Time: Monday, November 13th, at 2:30 PM

One aspect of our OLLI program is to help bring informative courses and presentations to our curriculum. We are thankful to have someone available to help us with our next presentation, "Sorting Through the Chaos of The Israeli-Hamas War, " which will take place, Monday, November 13th at 2:30 PM. This thought-provoking session will provide insights and analysis into the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict that ignited on October 7th, 2023. Don't miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the situation from OLLI Instructor Beth Hill-Skinner. Beth graduated from Norwich University, a premiere military institution, earning an M.A. in International Diplomacy with a specialization in transnational terrorism. She brings a depth of knowledge in the Middle East along with expertise in the field of both state and nonstate terrorism. More information and to sign-up, click here.

Hyflex Courses
Our Hyflex courses have greatly enhanced our program, offering flexible learning options for all members. To maintain their success, we're seeking your support.

Currently, OLLI relies on just two full-time and one part-time employee to manage various program aspects, including course creation, daily operations, registrations, and support for students and instructors. OLLI programs thrive when members actively participate, volunteer, join committees, assist with curriculum, and contribute in various ways, shaping our identity.

In comparison to other OLLIs, we have fewer volunteers within our program. Your involvement is vital to our programming. It doesn't require much effort, but it goes a long way.

We are in need of volunteers to facilitate our Hyflex courses. As facilitators, you will play a crucial role in delivering an enriching learning experience for all participants. It's a straightforward task, but your contribution can significantly impact the success of our program. If you have an hour or two a week and are willing to help, please contact us at olli@emory.edu. You can also attend the class for free!

Lunch and Learn Presentations in December!
Pack your imaginary suitcase and join us for a fun-filled trip down memory lane, via a one-day Inaugural OLLI lunch & learn “mini” TV show fest of our course: Thoughtful lessons for today found in our childhood lessons of yesterday! Through the vintage, historical television archives of “KUKLA, FRAN and OLLIE” and Mr. Rogers (never viewed in theaters!), as well as lively, upbeat discussion facilitated by long-time OLLI instructors, Abby Drue and Dr. Irma Starr, we will take a closer look at those childhood messages that are still with us and how they impact us today. A delicious lunch (with lotsa laughter on the side!) will be served for this special OLLI event!

_______________________________________________________________

In this 90-minute one-day class, we will enjoy learning about some of the world’s national anthems. Hear many familiar (e.g., O Canada; the Marseillaise; God Save the King) and less familiar (e.g., Kazakhstan; Bosnia) anthems. Learn what is the oldest, longest, shortest, most stirring, most fun, and most regulated anthem; what multilingual nations do for their anthem; and how anthems unite us nationally and internationally. We will also cover how our own anthem has been used as a protest tool, and of controversial performances of this, and other anthems. This includes some epic performance failures during official events (e.g., the Olympic Games). I will show videos featuring each anthem with the lyrics; feel free to sing along! Trust me, it can be contagious! About one week before class starts, I will email to enrollees a list of the 20+ anthems I’ve chosen; if I didn’t include your favorite anthem, just let me know and I’ll add it if time permits. Registrants for the in-class section will also enjoy Lunch (salad and pizza) provided by the instructor after class.
