The Social Sciences D-Lab offers about 80 workshops every semester. D-Lab workshop instructors teach scholars how to use important software and tools that support their research.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to lead two Excel workshops. These workshops are designed to equip attendees with fundamental and advanced Excel skills to effectively handle data, perform calculations, create charts, and utilize pivot tables.
Anticipate a commitment of 24-30 hours per semester. Availability for a continuous 3-hour period between Monday and Thursday, 9am-5pm, is required. Excel workshops are conducted both remotely and in-person, and the curriculum has already been established. Each workshop is presented twice within a semester. Additionally, there are two shorter, in-person workshops offered each semester, lasting approximately 90 minutes.
Required Qualifications:
Proficiency in Excel, with a strong understanding of functions, charts, pivot tables, and the VLOOKUP function.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Previous teaching or training experience is a plus.
Ability to adapt to different learning styles and levels of proficiency.
The UC Berkeley Digital Humanities Working Group is a research community founded to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations in the digital humanities and cultural analytics. Exploratory Data Analysis in Social Science Research

Causal inference has become the dominant endeavor for many political scientists, often at the expense of good research questions and theory building. Returning to descriptive inference – the process of describing the world as it exists – can help formulate research questions worth asking and theory that is grounded in reality. Exploratory data analysis is one method of conducting descriptive inference. It can help social science researchers find empirical patterns and puzzles that motivate their research questions, test correlations between variables, and engage with the existing literature on a topic. In this blog post, I walk through results from exploratory data analysis I conducted for my dissertation project on political ambition of women.

The College of the Liberal Arts at the Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-track joint appointment at the Assistant Professor rank in the departments of Applied Linguistics and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) to begin Fall 2024.
Applicants will have a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; or a related field at time of appointment. Outstanding evidence of research potential and a record of teaching excellence are required. Candidates must be theoretically and methodologically grounded in scholarship that overlaps within the fields of Applied Linguistics and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The Division of Social Sciences is pleased to announce a request for proposals for funding from
the Abigail Reynolds Hodgen Publication Fund. This endowment was established in 1937 to
assist with the publication of manuscripts by women graduate students or women faculty
(members of the Academic Senate) in the Social Sciences.
Women-identified Senate faculty and graduate students in the Social Sciences are eligible to apply. Awards are up to a maximum of $20,000. Proposals are restricted to those that require funding for publication costs, which includes manuscript workshops. Proposals need not be more than one or two pages. They should include the manuscript title, a brief description of the project, and a budget breaking out the different items on which funds are to be spent.
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis.
OpenAI is seeking current Bio or BioChem students (undergrad, Masters, or PhD candidates) to participate in the OpenAI Preparedness Program, a research experiment that will probe our AI frontier models for biologically related risks. The opportunity pays $75-$100/hr depending on current level of education, and the experiment spans 5 hours.
To help us better understand the risks from biology-related capabilities in search and language models, we are asking experts to help us probe the frontiers of these tools. In a virtually proctored setting spanning 5 hours or less, we will be asking you to use a set of (randomly assigned) digital tools (which may include our frontier language models) to complete a set of puzzles related to biologically-related risks, e.g., try to find instructions to do X, try to find suppliers to do Y.
