Dear <<First Name>>,
December 5, 2023
Session C was another fantastic Model UN Session!
Delegates from Session C on December 2.

The final HSMUN session of 2023 was last Saturday and it was a great and robust gathering to cap the year! Over 90 delegates from 16 different schools were in attendance to discuss a wide range of well-written and well-researched resolutions. Topics considered by the General Assembly included a call from Poland for Ukrainian refugee help, economic inequality in Kenya, illegal Mongolians living in South Korea, the independence of Kurds in Iraq, and a reduction in gang violence in various countries. Once again, the questions posed and amendments suggested were thoughtful and indicative of great critical thinking on global issues. A bit of fun irony was called out, too, such as Ukraine and Russia sitting together and even agreeing on some ideas; and the absence of a United States delegate, eliminating what would have surely been an interesting perspective at times. There was not enough time to discuss all resolutions submitted, so if those delegates submit them again, they will have high priority at our second semester sessions on February 17, 2024 and March 2, 2024. Watch for more details about those sessions in January through the Civitas newsletter and Civitas website.

Meet a real UN Peacekeeper on January 27, 2024!

Civitas has scheduled its first event for 2024 on Saturday, January 27 from 10:00 am until noon at Crossroads College Preparatory School. We are pleased to have Roel Harryvan, a former UN Peacekeeper through the Royal Netherlands Army, scheduled to talk to students. Roel and his family have lived in St. Louis since 1995 so Roel could be the Honorary Consul for the Netherlands, his home country, covering Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. Join us to hear Roel talk about all of his adventures, both as a UN Peacekeeper and as an Honorary Consul. Roel will share updates of current UN Peacekeeping endeavors and answer any questions you have about his past and current experiences working to bridge cultures and foster peace.

Students, help us better prepare everyone for this event, and win Game Changer points by doing so!

Arguably, the most important work of the United Nations is done by its peacekeepers. In 1950, North Korea invaded the sovereign country of South Korea. The North expected a quick victory, but South Korea requested UN involvement to help its defense. Eventually sixteen UN countries sent approximately 300,00 troops to the Korean Peninsula. They evened the fight, but it took three years for the combatants to reach a cease-fire. It was all possible because of UN peacekeepers, and since the 1950s, the UN has been involved in dozens of missions. Sometimes they are successful; sometimes not.

In order to better prepare all of us for Ambassador Harryvan's presentation, we would like Civitas students to offer to research key UN peacekeeping missions, and share their information with the Civitas community. Those who do a good job in providing information for us will earn a Game Changer point. Remember that the more Game Changer points that you earn, the more eligible you will become for Civitas 2024 paid summer internship.

If you are interested in a little researching and writing (perhaps an hour or two of work), please let Arthur know by e-mailing him at arthur@civitas-stl.com. Feel free to ask him questions or to offer suggestions.
