OSSE to release draft Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Standards: Feedback Invitation

On Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will release draft Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Standards for feedback and public comment. OSSE would like to invite school, family and community participation in upcoming stakeholder engagement feedback sessions on the standards. These sessions will provide opportunities for participants to learn more about SEL and why it is important for students in schools. Participants will experience a facilitated walk-through of each standard and aligned indicators.

SEL is the process through which students and adults activate the knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions (CASEL, 2023). We encourage student, teacher, leader, staff, family and community participation during these events. Public Feedback Session dates are as follows:

  • Virtual sessions: Tuesday, Dec. 19, 6-7:30 p.m. or Jan. 18, 2024, 6-7:30 p.m.

  • In-Person at OSSE, 1050 First St. NE: Jan. 9, 2024, 12-2 p.m. or 5:30-7:30 p.m.

To RSVP, please fill out this form and a follow-up invitation will be sent to you. If you are unable to attend the scheduled sessions, you may also submit feedback by visiting  https://osse.dc.gov/page/social-emotional-learning. This will take users to the OSSE Social Emotional Learning page, where you will find two buttons - one to read the standards drafts and one to provide feedback via a survey. The feedback submission period is Friday, Dec. 15 to Monday, Jan. 22, 2024.

For questions, please contact Marcus Hughes at Marcus.Hughes@dc.gov. We appreciate and honor your participation in this very important process!

Universal Screener Data Analysis Two-Part Training

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is pleased to announce a new training focused on literacy data analysis. This two-part series builds off the dyslexia awareness modules, focuses on analyzing universal screener data and is suitable for all K-2 educators, coaches and administrators.

Part one of the training focuses on the characteristics of a universal screener, the alignment between the science of reading research and screener data and the practices used to analyze classroom-level screener data.

Part two of the training focuses on analyzing skill-based student data. Participants will understand how to locate student-level data, analyze student errors in each skill and identify the next instructional steps.

This training will be asynchronous. To receive professional learning units (PLUs), participants will need to complete both parts of the training. However, participants can choose to do only one module or complete them in any order.  Register for this training here.
