Words from Father Ed
Dear All St. Patrick’s Members!

Many thanks to all who were present last Sunday and gave their pledge cards to St. Patrick’s operating fund for 2024. We have now received 48 pledge cards, some “gathered” last Sunday and others delivered or mailed in. We will be asking those who have not yet sent in theirs to do so. We will report the total number & total amount on Sunday December 17th
Next Sunday, December 3rd is the first Sunday of Advent. We will begin our “countdown” to Christmas. We will also be presenting an Advent program which will take place in the Common Room immediately following the regular Wednesday Eucharist and healing service, which will be in the Church.
So, beginning this Wednesday, November 29th and continuing on the Wednesdays of December 6, 13, & 20, you are invited to the Eucharist & Healing followed immediately by the 11AM presentations called “Advent Unfolding”. Please thank the Education Committee and Sharron Simpson our leader for the Advent program.

There will be some minor liturgical adjustments for the Advent season.
  • We will not sing the Gloria.
  • We will sing the Kyrie eleison.
  • Our hymns will be Advent, not Christmas hymns or carols. They come in Christmas season.
  • Our vestments will be violet or blue.
  •  We will have an advent wreath with a short candle lighting prayer each Sunday.
  •  There will be greens on the altar, not flowers (except Rose Sunday Dec 17th
  • Thanks to the altar guild, we will decorate for Christmas after the 10AM Advent service on Sunday, December 24th, for celebration of the Christmas Eve Eucharist at 5PM.

Thank you and God Bless you.

Father Ed

Food Bank Distribution!
Greetings Friends! Check out Eleanor's thankful note to her volunteers from Monday, November 13. The team will return again on November 27

Dear All,

Thank you to Pam/Larry, Lauri, Carolyn, drop-in Natalie, driver Tomi and rep Arturo.  Tonight
64 families/223 individuals received food on St Pat's dark but very well lighted parking lot!  This is the most families/individuals we've had for years!  The good news is that we and REFB helped so many; the bad news is that so many are in such need of food.  And, talk about quantity and variety - tonight was unbelievable!   All of the volunteers were working at mack speed!

Of special interest: Baritone driver,Tomi, sang "Amazing Grace" in St Pat's Narthex!  I harmonized the last few measures.  Talk about thrilling!  I asked him if he sang with a choir.  "No" to which I responded, "Well, that's just wrong!"

Please help provide wrapped candies for the Dec 11 distribution!  I need to have them before Saturday, Dec 2, when on Dec 3, St Pat folks will bag and decorate paper lunch bags. I hope all St Pat volunteers can come Dec 11,  wearing festive attire or not!  There will not be a 4th Monday distribution because that's Christmas Day!
Please help us brighten up the season for these children! If you have any questions, place talk with Eleanor Albon.

Volunteers for Nov 23 are Joel/Anna, Natalie and Carolyn.

Feeling really good about how we are answering God's call to feed the hungry...

Eleanor

New Tenets at St. Patrick's!
St. Patrick's Family!

We would like to officially welcome new tenets Shirah and Nathan to St. Patrick's and Kenwood Community! Shirah and Nathan moved into the studio apartment a few weeks ago. They are a lovely couple who are excited to begin their new journey here in Kenwood!

Christmas Cookies. Cookies, Cookies!

The holidays are fast approaching, and the Pastoral Care Ministry is planning a cookie treat box delivery to our parishioners who are unable to attend services and fellowship because of various limitations.  We at St. Patrick’s want to bring them Christmas greetings, holiday cheer, and Christmas treats to let them know that they are valued members of our church family and that we miss them.

We need approximately 60 dozen cookies for our gift-giving, and we are asking St. Patrick’s wonderful cookie angels to make 2 to 3 dozen cookies each, each cookie no larger than 2 inches in diameter, in order to fill the gift boxes.  Please bring your cookies to St. Patrick’s the week of December 3 – 10.

We will be packing the boxes after church on December 10, 2023, and sending people to deliver the boxes and our loving Christmas wishes to our members who are unable to join us for worship, fellowship, and activities.

We are blessed to have many excellent cookie bakers so please join us in this ministry.  Most cookies freeze well so start now!

There will be cookie-baking sign-up sheets in the narthex and in Stevenson Hall for you to sign up to contribute to this worthy event.  There will also be sign-up sheets for those who are able to volunteer to help deliver the gift boxes.

Thank you for your help on this beloved St. Patrick's Christmas tradition!

Nomadic Shelter Is Back!

Back row left to right: Beth Lewis, Karen & Brad Brogfeldt, Rich Randolph.
Front row left to right: Carol Luther, Merle Holtzen, Eleanor Albon, Bernadette Gibb.

On November 4, St. Patrick’s hosted our first Nomadic Shelter of the season. We hosted 13 guests and 4 staff and had 10 volunteers.   Everyone enjoyed the Shepard’s Pie made by Margaret Merchat.
The other volunteers were Brian and Karen Borgfeldt, Merle Holtzen, Eleanor Albon, Rich Randolph, Laurie Boone Hogen, Rev. Carol Luther, and Beth Lewis. Bernadette Gibb provided a wonderful hors d’oeuvre, and serving support! Everyone was very flexible, adapting to whatever task was required.  All of us sat with our guests and enjoyed the dinner, rounded out with a mixed fruit salad and a lot of cookies.  Many of the cookies were donated by PEO, the group that used Stevenson Hall earlier that day.
Our guests seemed to enjoy our company.  One asked about the Episcopal church and its beliefs.  One staff member described the Work-to-Save program that Redwood Gospel Mission has for people to save up for housing.
Diana Estabrook provided some cookies, Andes mints, and new hair combs for our guests. Karen and Brian Borgfeldt made up some “Goodie Bags” that were a hit, with practical things like tissues, affirmations and statements of encouragement, and a tiny little compressed fabric that turns into a washcloth!
On Sunday morning they left at 6:00 and there was not a trace left behind.  Only the tables needed to be moved so it was easy to get ready for coffee hour after church.
We will host again on December 2, the first Saturday of the. month.  If you’re interested in helping, please contact Betsy Randolph at (408)981-2024 or by email at rjurny@gmail.com.
Our guests were very grateful for the warm place to sleep and the delicious meal.  They’ll be happy to return to us in December.

Blessing Bags

56 Blessing Bags were delivered from St. Patrick’s last Sunday!  What a generous contribution the people of St. Patrick’s made to help our brothers and sisters right here in Sonoma County.
The attendant at Redwood Gospel Mission was really pleased to have these Blessing Bags.  He explained that one way they use them is to provide a meal for people that are taking classes at the Mission.
The next deadline for Blessing Bags is December 10, the second Sunday of the month.  Please consider helping with this ministry.  If you have questions, please contact Betsy Randolph at (408)981-1001 or email at Rjurny@gmail.com.  There are lists of contents on a table in the narthes.

Here’s what goes in the Blessing Bags:
1 pop top can of pasta with meat
1 juice box
1 granola-type bar
1 package of crackers with cheese or peanut butter
A napkin and sturdy plastic fork
Place everything in a quart-sized plastic bag.  The stretchable Glad bags work very well.  If you like, you can include a short hopeful message.

You can drop off your blessing bags in the blessing bag box located in the narthex or deliver to the Randolph's home: 8399 Oakmont Dr., Santa Rosa, CA 95409.
Please call Betsy Randolph for questions at (408)981-2024.

What An Honor!

The Very Rev. Ed Howell and Bishop Megan

The 113th Diocesan Convention of the Diocese of Northern California was held at Faith Church in Cameron Park, California on November 3rd, and 4th, 2023.  Three lay delegates attended:  Jackie Senter and Ron and Sandy Keith.  Five resolutions were voted on, several reports were presented, several ministries gave presentations, the names of clergy passing since the Convention in 2022 were read, and clergy new to the Diocese were presented.
Every year the bishop presents the Bishop’s Cross to clergy and/or lay Episcopalians who have given faithful and meritorious service within the Diocese of Northern California.  This year, Bishop Megan played a bit of a guessing game with those congregated at Convention by mentioning the many and varied kinds of service given in the Diocese and asking us to guess who that might be.  After listening to all the accolades of the candidate, Jackie guessed it might be Mark Dibelka, Missioner for Disaster Resilience.  Sandy whispered to Ron, “It’s Fr. Ed.  He’s done all those things.”  After a few minutes of suspense, the first recipient of the Bishop’s Cross was announced.  Much to his surprise it was The Very Reverend Ed Howell.  Fr. Ed is certainly worthy of such an honor!  Some of his meritorious service projects include but are not limited to helping 5 parishes in the Russian River Deanery recover from major difficulties (including St. Patrick’s), serving as Dean of the Russian River Deanery, and serving on the Diocesan Board of Trustees.  When Bishop Megan presented him with the Bishop’s Cross, Fr. Ed received a standing ovation.  St. Patrick’s is blessed to have him as our Priest-in-Charge at this time.  What an honor indeed!

Remembering Those Who Have Passed

St. Patrick's parishioners commemorated the souls of the departed this last Sunday, November the 5th, in our service and with  an "ofrenda" or special altar.

At this "altar" many parishioners placed photos of their loved ones and offered prayers for those no longer with us physically, but with us in spirit.

Many churches in the diocese have created these altars at the suggestion and recommendation of Bishop Megan as a way of including additional cultural references and meaning in our observances.

The creating of altars to remember our loved ones is part of  the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It’s a holiday full of beautiful traditions, family, and celebration of lives we’ve lost. Among those traditions is the ofrenda, an altar placed in people’s homes during Día de los Muertos.

Ofrenda means “offering” in English and it’s an altar that families create in their homes, or at cemeteries or churches. It is this beautiful way of letting go and of grieving, and understanding that death is a part of life. And that it's something that's universal.

Kitchen Additions!
There are some wonderful and much needed additions to St Patrick's kitchen!  Shona Burns provided a new 30-cup coffee percolator.  Merle Holtzen provided two rolling serving carts which were assembled by Ron Keith!  We all will benefit for years to come!  Many thanks to all three!
