You will probably receive a lot of emails like this one today, so we’ll keep it brief.

It’s #GivingTuesday (or what we prefer to call #GivingNewsDay), built on the idea that radical generosity should follow the splurging of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This day is all about helping our communities, showing up for issues that matter and acknowledging our shared humanity.

Today, we have an an exciting opportunity to turn every $1 you donate into $3, thanks to our friends at the Wellington United Church of Christ in Chicago. Its congregation has pledged matching funds toward our campaign to fund impactful journalism that serves communities of color, while training the next generation of investigative reporters. That means when we raise $2,000, it will be matched twice — once by Wellington UCC -- and once by the NewsMatch national fund.

If you'd like to spread your donation over time, it will still be matched. As long as you make a donation before Dec. 31, whatever you give -- or pledge to give over the next 12 months -- will be matched up to $1,000. With support from leaders like you, who believe in fact-based, nonpartisan news coverage, we will meet our goal of $50,000.

We cannot overstate the importance of this fundraising campaign, which will set us up for 2024 and ensure we can continue our crucial mission to bring you news that can make a real difference in our communities.

We believe journalism should serve the public interest of all. But we need support from folks like you to uphold that cause. A stronger Chicago begins with you. Will you invest in us?

With gratitude,
Laura Washington
