Holiday greetings

The busyness of fall on our farm has made the holiday season sneak up on us a bit here at Common Roots. Well-timed rains followed by sunny days have let us finish sowing cover crops. These seeds have already begun to sprout and will feed our soil biology during the dormant season, protect from erosion, and offer nitrogen and more organic matter for next year‘s crops. Cheers to ecological farming!

On behalf of our Board and staff, Common Roots wishes each of you a healthy, happy holiday season filled with opportunities to spend time doing what you love and being with those you love. Thank you, as always, for joining us in this inclusive farming endeavor.

Blooms of Thanks a big hit

As we cleared the last of 2023’s flower crop from our field and replaced it with winter cover crop, we are pleased to report that nearly 200 people received Blooms of Thanks this season. Boy, does that feel good!

Common Roots distributed over 400 market bouquets in 2023, thanks in part to support from the Palo Alto Medical Group’s Healthcare Endowment Fund. Partners assisted us in distributing these bouquets to the many staff who play an essential role in supporting people with disabilities to live their best lives.

Thank you to the individuals with and without disabilities who came together weekly to make these bouquets. Enjoy these photos that capture just some of the beauty and gratitude these flowers conveyed.

Here are some comments we received after delivering Blooms of Thanks in our community:
“The most special flowers to give out to our beloved staff. A huge thank you to Common Roots Farm for giving us this opportunity to pass them along.“ — Oceanside SLS
“So appreciative of the flowers! Best farm ever!!“ — Blooms of Thanks recipient
“Is this too good to be true?“ — Blooms of Thanks recipient

The Blooms of Thanks crew did a fantastic job and had some fun along the way. Farmers, you grew an amazing array of organic blooms. We are so glad you all made this project such a success and we hope to do it again next year!
