Giving Tuesday is here!
It’s the big day! At Equine Outreach, our goal is to raise $20,000 for our 2024 Emergency Medical Fund. Between last year's Giving Tuesday and this year's Giving Tuesday we have spent $55,000 on medical care and medication for our small senior herd.
Read on to learn more about the care you helped us to provide in 2023 to ensure our horses stay happy & healthy - and how you can help us face these challenges headfirst as we go into 2024. We can’t thank you enough for your support! |

Like all creatures, our beloved horses are not exempt from the inevitable challenges of aging. As their years advance, so do their healthcare needs and costs. Senior horses not only require life long, ongoing medical support, but they are also more prone to health complications that require intense and rapid medical intervention.
These unexpected veterinary emergencies can quickly escalate from mere concerns to issues needing costly intervention to major crises. Although we know to expect something, we don't know what to expect or how much it is going to cost us to save a life or, in the harder cases, ensure that a herd member’s last days and moments are the best they can possibly be. Below are some examples of the lifesaving care we provided, with your help, in 2023: |
|
| Mocha’s Ulcer Treatment… and More!
Mocha, our brave boy, had a series of health challenges this year, starting with an ulcer treatment that cost us $3,000. He was also diagnosed with Cushing’s disease, insulin resistance, and required hock injections for serious arthritis.
Aging hits hard, but together we can make it less painful for our horses. |

| Patch’s Choke
Our newest member of the herd, Patch, has had episodes of choke due to deteriorating teeth, a common issue with old horses. After antibiotics and vet bills, we spent approximately $500 to ensure there were no further complications.
Your donation will help us provide the important care our seniors need. |

| Sassy’s Sinusitis
Sassy was hospitalized this year for an infection in one of her sinuses, which was not resolved with conservative treatment at the ranch. She had a series of daily sinus flushes through a portal in her sinus during her week-long hospital stay, costing $2,000.
Together, we can help our equines breath more easily! |

| Pearl’s Accident
Last winter, our lovely girl Black Pearl suffered a fright after slipping on an icy patch and hitting a tree. Pearl has Wobblers, a degenerative neurological disease and these incidents can occur as a result. We took immediate action and thankfully, she only walked away with a small cut on her head. This unexpected incident cost us $1,000.
With your help, we can provide emergency care to our equines right when they need it! |

| BonBon’s Enucleation
The last few months of this year have been challenging for our BonBon and the humans that care for her. After unsuccessful corneal ulcer treatments, a common issue with Cushing’s horses, she finally had her painful eye removed to help improve her quality of life.
While the surgery went well, BonBon suffered post-treatment complications involving stress and inappetence, requiring a second stay in hospital. All this added up to approximately $6,000. With your help on this Giving Tuesday, we can tackle such challenges head on. |

| Saying Goodbye
Saying goodbye is the hardest part of our journey. In the last 12 months we have had to say goodbye to 5 of our beloved herd members - a sad but inevitable outcome of senior horse rescue. Euthanasia and respectful resting is a big cost for our large equine friends and we spent $5,000 on this in 2023.
Contribute today to help us assure a dignified goodbye when the time comes. |

How to Donate |
Without the support of generous donors like you, we would not be able to save senior lives! We are 100% donor funded. We need your help to be able to give our aging equines the love and care they deserve.
This year, Equine Outreach is encouraging donations through the Central Oregon Gives program. The nonprofit that raises the most will receive a bonus of up to $15,000. Winning this bonus will give us enough emergency medical funding to rescue two more senior horses in 2024, offering them a lifeline they otherwise may not have. In essence, every generous donation, no matter its size, could be the difference between more senior equines finding a loving, comforting place to live out their golden years or facing an uncertain fate. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in these horses' lives.
Consider donating to us through our Central Oregon Gives campaign below, and you will also earn a nice perk for yourself from the week’s community sponsors! |

We are also gladly accepting donations via our website, Venmo, or check to our mailing address (2660 NE HWY 20, Ste 610-548, Bend, OR 97701) - whatever works best for you! Note that checks may also be sent in to us directly but counted towards our Central Oregon Gives campaign by noting “Central Oregon Gives” in the memo. |

We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for considering putting some of your giving dollars this year towards the care of our senior rescued herd! |
