Happy Thanksgiving!

It has been a busy month in LA Unified as we gear up for the holiday season. We celebrated the groundbreaking of a new outdoor classroom at Laurel Early Education Center just as the Board directed more new investments in greening and innovative learning spaces on our campuses. The Board also approved my recent resolution to expand access to afterschool programming for our students. And my push to create more workforce housing projects is moving forward with community meetings and an official request to gather more information and interest.

While there is plenty of work ahead, there is also so much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. I’m especially thankful for the teachers and school staff working tirelessly to drive progress for our students, for the collaboration of our families and partners to support the success of our school communities, and for the continued efforts of the District to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in LAUSD.

I hope you and your families all have a happy, healthy, and restful Thanksgiving holiday!

In gratitude,

Over the past few weeks, my team and I were thrilled to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Laurel EEC outdoor classroom, grand opening of the Brentwood Science library and parent center, unveiling of the new Uni High marquee, Wright MS STEAM Night, and Dia de los Muertos at Broadway ES and Grand View ES. I also had a chance to check out the great work of our partners at the Laundry Truck LA in recognition of National Homeless Youth Awareness Month and see the finished track and field at Taft HS.
In the Spotlight: Giving thanks for one of our hardworking B&G workers!
Local District West / Region WestWe are thankful for the hard work of all our school employees, including Building & Grounds worker Florine Crummie from Taft High! Florine is originally from Dallas, Texas, but now as a proud Angeleno, she has worked at Taft for 28 years—her first and only job in LAUSD! She loves how the staff and students are so respectful and so cool to her, and enjoys all the compliments she gets for her incredible school spirit, especially from the school's plant manager, who calls her "Miss Taft." Florine says that the Taft community is like a family. In her free time, she enjoys going to church and bible study, as well as hanging out and cooking with her daughter, who she says is her best friend, and with her grandkids.
