Contemporary Ethics: Theories And Issues
Join instructor David Smith as he presents a special presentation on the controversial issue of gun control.
Mon., Dec 04, 2023 - 1:00PM - 2:00PM

Free to Members - Click here to register.
Moral theories are interpretations of morality with some reasoning to back them up that one can articulate. A good theory can tell us what makes anything right or wrong, provide structure to our thinking, and give real-life guidance. In this lecture, taken from his Contemporary Ethics series which will be offered in January 2024.  David will explain how theories work and apply them to the controversial issue of gun control.

Bio: Dr. David E. Smith grew up in the world of fundamentalist religion. As an adult he gradually moved away from that worldview and became a religious progressive/skeptic. After earning an M.A. in philosophy of religion, he received a second M.A. and a Ph.D. in religious studies from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Formerly a full-time philosophy and religious studies faculty member at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA, he now teaches for the National Osher Resource Center and offers independent seminars and personal consultations in comparative religion and philosophy. He has published widely in these areas, as well. His mission is to empower people to think well for themselves about things that matter.

One Day presentations coming up soon!
Discover the ancient art of wire wrapping in jewelry, tracing its roots to civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It endured through medieval and Renaissance periods, gaining momentum during the Art Nouveau movement. Experiencing a revival in the 1960s and 1970s, it remains a prominent technique in contemporary design, allowing artists to create a spectrum of pieces, from minimalist to intricately woven. Join instructor Virginia Milner to learn this versatile technique and look forward to her upcoming course on reimagining old jewelry. With these skills, you can breathe new life into old favorites, transforming them into creations to be worn and cherished once again!
This one-day class delves into Atlanta's transformative history during the Civil War and its aftermath. Explore the circumstances that granted freedom to Atlanta's enslaved population. While the end of slavery marked a crucial milestone, it also ushered in challenges, providing limited opportunities for African Americans in the aftermath.

_______________________________________________________________

In this 90-minute one-day class, we will enjoy learning about some of the world’s national anthems. Hear many familiar (e.g., O Canada; the Marseillaise; God Save the King) and less familiar (e.g., Kazakhstan; Bosnia) anthems. Learn what is the oldest, longest, shortest, most stirring, most fun, and most regulated anthem; what multilingual nations do for their anthem; and how anthems unite us nationally and internationally. We will also cover how our own anthem has been used as a protest tool, and of controversial performances of this, and other anthems. This includes some epic performance failures during official events (e.g., the Olympic Games). I will show videos featuring each anthem with the lyrics; feel free to sing along! Trust me, it can be contagious! About one week before class starts, I will email to enrollees a list of the 20+ anthems I’ve chosen; if I didn’t include your favorite anthem, just let me know and I’ll add it if time permits. Registrants for the in-class section will also enjoy Lunch (salad and pizza) provided by the instructor after class.
