From the Headmaster

Dear Parents

As my body is just about getting used to winter temperatures and going to work in the dark (although, given that I don’t outside to go to work, that latter point might be disputed), my spirits are lifted by the prospect of today’s Christmas Fair which will bring bustle and a good deal of joy to the Chapel, Games Room and the areas around the North end of the School. That must mean that the Advent Service and the Christmas Boarding weekend can’t be far away!

As ever, we are extremely grateful to the hard work of Friends of Cargilfield who have given their time and enthusiasm to bring the Fair together. I can see how many elements there are to make both Christmas and Summer fairs work so well: both are opportunities for bringing our wider community together and are much appreciated.

Communities like Cargilfield depend upon good will. People who volunteer their time or go above and beyond what is expected of them because of their loyalty to and affection for the School are part of what helps us to succeed and achieve more than we might expect. I would also place our governors into this category: once again, giving of their time and expertise (and often lots of both) without remuneration.

We all hope that our children are developing those green shoots of generosity – taking satisfaction from helping others rather than always asking ‘what’s in it for me’ – and from conversations at the recent School Council meeting, I’m pleased to see them flourishing.

In the meantime, enjoy the Christmas Fair and thanks to everyone involved who are helping to raise funds for the School and for this year’s chosen charities.

Fettes Classics Day

Some of Form 7 had a fantastic time at the annual Classics Day held at Fettes. We learned about the story of Perseus and Medusa from a storyteller, created a mosaic of Medusa’s snakey head, learned about Greco-Roman pottery, discovered whether we had what it takes to be a centurion in the Roman army, and enjoyed a delicious Roman feast for lunch!

Wednesday Match Day!

We had our final full block of hockey and rugby fixtures on what was a blustery Wednesday afternoon, where we played Strathallan home and away in a series of competitive and fun matches.  The girls played their final hockey games of the season and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and playing with a smile!

Form 5 and Nutrition

Form 5 have been learning about food groups and nutrition in Science. After looking closely at the food pyramid, they explored starch in a variety of foods using iodine. They created some interesting hypothesis prior to the experiment and compared their findings. Using a fair test and lots of discussion some fascinating observations were made, with Mrs MacKerron adding in her expertise too.

Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships

After two weeks' training on the Ergo rowing machine kindly lent to us by Fettes, our team of intrepid rowers headed over to Fettes who were hosting this year's Scottish Rowing Indoor Championships.  It was terrific to see the children competing in what is a very new sport for them, and even better that we won one gold and two silver medals!

Form 4 Viking Day

Form 4 Viking Day included dressing up in Viking costumes, learning about Norse mythology, participating in Viking-themed games and challenges, viewing traditional food and even learning how to row in a real Viking longboat. We engaged in arts and crafts to create our very own Viking-inspired shields, which we used in some shield wall training. Many thanks to Simon the Viking who provided such a hands-on experience of Viking culture and history.

Remembrance

On Friday morning, we came together in Chapel for our annual Service of Remembrance, to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by the 190 old boys and masters during both World Wars. It was especially poignant this year as Cargilfield is celebrating its 150th anniversary and it is also exactly 100 years ago since our Chapel was built in memory of the 126 old boys who died in WW1 and whose names are remembered on our War Memorial.

Other classes utilised the BBC Teach 'Make a noise' video about bullying and this evening our F8's were joined by Leeanne Turner, Child Protection Lead for Edinburgh City Council. Leeanne ran a great workshop on Banter vs Bullying.

Cargilfield in Top 50 for Cricket!

Fantastic that our all year round cricket programme for boys and girls has been recognised by the Cricketer magazine and that Cargilfield is listed as one of the top 50 Prep Schools in the UK for cricket, and the only one in Scotland.  This is testament to the enthusiasm of the children to attend winter nets on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and the dedication of our coaching team.  We are looking forward to some sunshine and another exciting Summer of cricket ahead!

Cal the Calamari

Every Thursday one of the nursery children takes our Cargilfield SHANARRI Calamari home to spend the weekend. Over the weekend they are given the opportunity to show how they can follow the 8 Indicators, Safe, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Responsible, Respected, Healthy and Included. This week the children have been very lucky to have a giant Calamari called Big Cal to visit. The children have been spending time showing them how the follow each indicator at nursery. We have had great fun!
