You provide support (donations and awareness) to what you value...
Before 2016, when I was Chair of Canadian VHL Alliance (the 'other' VHL group in Canada), I actually got approval -for this exception-to contract the VHL Alliance (in US) as an "intermediary". It was contract where they would help us to make research grants and we give/regulate money to them based on progress, etc. Unfortunately, this plan didn't didn't go any further. This is one rationale for having an independent registered "Canadian" VHL patient group
in Canada, other advantages include...
if you donate to a Registered Charitable Group (charity), you get an official CRA Income Tax Receipt
groups cannot simply transfer money to "anyone" (e.g. another country)
groups can gift other Canadian registered charitable groups (qualified' as defined by CRA)
groups are regulated by Canadian income tax laws and open to public inquiries, e.g., charity in another country may not have obligation or accountability to anyone outside of their country
Help us to fill a gap in Canada.
We have moderate expenses to operate a peer support network specifically for VHL patients and their families in Canada.
