Learn more about Black Opportunities Fund
As part of the University of Toronto's commitment to addressing anti-Black racism and promoting Black excellence and inclusion, Black@UTM has announced the Black Opportunities Fund (BOF) to support administrative staff, librarians, faculty, departments and committees to lead initiatives that are aligned with the 56 action-oriented recommendations from the Anti-Black Racism Task Force report at UTM.
To be eligible for the BOF, projects must align with one or more of the following three themes:
Building Capacity through projects that address diverse governance structures, create leadership and accountability opportunities, and provide anti-Black racism training.
Growing Community through projects that promote Black inclusive spaces, support cross-cultural dialogue and celebrations and increase access to services and resources for self-identifying Black UTM individuals, their allies and supporters.
Deepening Understanding through projects that centre the voices of self-identifying Black individuals through impactful data collection and storytelling and mitigating gaps in complaints and investigation processes.

Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation chief retires
Gimaa (Chief) Stacey Laforme has retired after eight years as head of the Mississaugas of Credit First Nation (MCFN), on whose land UTM operates.
Born and raised on MCFN, Laforme was first elected to council in 1999 before being named Gimaa in 2015. Laforme worked to increase the profile of the First Nation and has been very active throughout MCFN’s Treaty Lands and Territory. He’s shown great leadership and friendship to communities everywhere, including UTM, which is honoured to carry the Mississauga name. In March, MCFN and UTM co-hosted the inaugural All-Nations Powwow.
On Dec. 9, Claire Sault was chosen as the new Gimaa.
We want to hear about what our UTM community is doing, whether it's finding creative ways to work and play, rallying to support the community or taking time to snuggle with your pup. You can send your story tips and photos to UTM's Office of Communications by emailing kate.martin@utoronto.ca
